I’ve read about this story years ago and it’s still as baffling today. If I had to guess, I’d lean more towards a UFO encounter than anything else.

“Murky history” indeed! According to all accounts, these individuals were extremely intelligent. I don’t think ALL of them would have run away from the warmth of their tents & belongings w/o feeling an immense measure of terror &/or threat.
