My Sighting

A listener writes “I’ve had three unusual experiences along the same stretch of road in southern Wisconsin involving what I believe were Bigfoot type creatures and a mysterious white orb. I’m from the Beloit/Janesville area in south-central Wisconsin, along the Rock River.

The first experience happened on my very first night driving alone. I was heading home from Janesville on Afton Road, just before reaching the small town before the final 55 mph stretch into Beloit. It was nighttime, and I noticed what I assumed was a motorcycle headlight behind me, so I didn’t think much of it.

As I entered the town, I saw a sheriff’s deputy parked outside the bar at the bottom of the hill. I realized I was speeding, hit my brakes hard, and made it through without being pulled over. However, the light behind me was approaching incredibly fast. I assumed it was the deputy coming after me.

I drove over the hill where the road opens into farmland and continued down the highway. The light kept gaining on me until it was directly behind my TrailBlazer. Then, without warning, it shot into my vehicle. The inside of my SUV became unbelievably bright so bright that it temporarily blinded me. Just as suddenly as it appeared, the light vanished completely.

My second experience happened farther north on Afton Road near the Rock River while I was fishing. Across the river, I heard what sounded like tree knocks. The pattern repeated several times probably five or six times and each sequence consisted of three distinct knocks. At the time, it immediately made me think of reports I had heard from other Bigfoot witnesses.

My final experience was my actual sighting.

I was near a section of the Ice Age Trail where three paths meet. The left path led to a bridge that had been destroyed by a tornado, the middle was a wooded trail, and the right followed a concrete path into a park. I had been fishing near the old bridge and noticed what looked like a good fishing hole farther upstream, so I took the middle trail about 30 to 40 feet before stepping down onto a small riverbank.

I had been fishing there for only three or four minutes when I heard movement. I looked toward the opening where the three trails met and saw something large and black. It was in a crouched position and, in one fluid motion, stood up and immediately launched into the woods between my position and the concrete path. I could hear it crashing through the forest for what seemed like hundreds of yards.

The entire sighting lasted only a split second, so I couldn’t make out facial features or fine details. What stood out most was its size and build. From my perspective, it appeared to be somewhere between 6 and 7½ feet tall. I was standing on a lower riverbank while it was on higher ground, but even accounting for that, it was enormous. Its body was extremely dark almost black and incredibly broad. In that brief moment before it turned and ran, it looked close to four feet wide across the shoulders. From the angle I saw it, the head did not appear pointed.

There have been one or two confirmed black bear sightings in the area over the years, but not for a long time, and those were reported south of Janesville rather than where this occurred. Based on what I saw, I don’t believe it was a bear.

My interest in Bigfoot didn’t begin with this sighting. Before this, I had heard unexplained calls, found large prints, and come across unusual structures in the woods. I’ve also been fascinated by the many stories preserved in Native American traditions. One thing that has always stood out to me is that numerous tribes many of whom had conflicts with one another shared remarkably similar stories about the same type of large, hairy, humanlike being.

I’d love the opportunity to discuss these experiences with you if you’re interested. If not, thank you for taking the time to read about my encounters.”
