Montana woman reports sighting at the edge of backyard

In mid July 2004 I was on my back porch it faces east and it faces a mountain I live in the woods on the side of my house where the creature was the house is scarcely wooded and the land is flat. The sun was shining. The reason I went out side is this, my dogs started to bark and run through the house they got half way through the dog door stopped an whined. I thought that was odd so I went and sat on the back porch. Then I saw the tree to my left move and the tree was about 300 yards away from me or less I am bad with measurements. So I watched the tree to see what caught my eye and then I saw the creature. It was behind the tree looking out from behind it. It’s head was in the branches and it was hunching. It’s head was large and it had a definite brow I thought I was seeing an orangutang. Except it was about 6 and a half feet tall. It was moving it’s head around the tree to watch me as I stood up to get a better look. It’s hair was a rust color like to color of dead pine needles, It’s eyes were haunting. And it was completely silent. It was watching me while I was watching it. I sat back down. I watched outside for about 6 minutes and didn’t tell the person on the phone.
Then I went in the house and watched through the window to make sure it wasn’t a trick of shadow. Then the creature moved in front of the tree, staying hunched over but watching me in the window. I watched a few more minutes and then went to the back of the house when I went back it was gone. While this was going on my kids were in the front yard playing in the water. I think if the creature had been aggressive it would have made some sort of move but it did seem peaceful. It seemed to be curious I think it was young to be in such a vulnerable open area.
When my husband came home we went out to the tree and all of the knapweed was completely trampled down around the tree. We didn’t find any hair though. I have never seen the creature again.

This sighting took place roughly 12 miles WNW of Missoula, just off Highway 93. There have been several other sightings in the area, including one in July of 2012 along a popular hiking trail just above the city. One of the observers was a veterinarian from Massachusetts who was visiting her daughter in Missoula. The daughter was able to get an iPhone photo of it’s head and shoulders just before it walked out of sight down hill. While adjacent to a major metropolitan area (for Montana) it is only a few miles from the Rattlesnake Wilderness and adjacent restricted tribal lands, very rugged country with lots of wildlife. All of these are listed on the BFRO public database under Missoula County, Montana.

I had such a difficult time getting through the story because of the lack of punctuation that I had to stop and read each sentence twice then try to figure out what was happening and then go back again and look at the details in fact I totally missed the part where she was on the phone I was like on the phone with who when did anyone say anything about a phone wait what happened again?

even with bright sunshine im finding it hard to believe she can make out eyes and brow ridge from 300yds, she must have damn good eyesight because i have great eye sight and im sure i would struggle at that distance.

People can have awesome eyesight. Once out hunting with my father in the Mt. Baker wilderness in WA, we were sitting having lunch when he said, “hey, do you see that herd of mountain goats on that mountain over there?” As I said no, I grabbed my rifle and looked through the scope, still couldn’t see anything. I grabbed the huge pair of Rockford Files binoculars and I could barely make out white dots on the mountainside moving around. The only reason I saw the white dots was because the sun was glinting off their coats.
Dad was dictating every single move those goats made with his bare eyes while I was watching through binoculars, crazy stuff. I estimated the mountain to be 2.5 to 3 miles away.

Dad’s eyesight was 20/05 in one eye and 20/10 in the other.
