Moehau is reported to be a large, hairy hominid cryptid

The moehau (also called the maeroero) is reputed to be a large, hairy hominid cryptid in the Coromandel-Moehau ranges of New Zealand’s North Island. It may be synonymous with the maero, another New Zealand cryptid, because both have been reported to have long, sharp fingers in some sources. Duke gives us a Moehau report.

    Duke ,
Im sorry but this just a load of BS , i live here in NZ and it makes laugh a bit as it just that a story. I spend a fair bit of free time hunting and have never heard of any of this even from my friends who are Maori. Yes we did have very large flightless birds called MOA which the Maori hunted to extinction and that due to their size could have been responsible for the scaring the Maori thus starting a legend Just imagine an ostrich on steroids and about 10 feet tall but being plant eaters not a predator. We also had a eagle of large enough per portions to carry away children ,again the Maori have stories of this.
This is another of those cases of people wanting to believe that these things are every where and wanting to have their own native big foot. Its a huge problem in the Bigfoot world from what i can see is people want to believe so bad they will tie far to to much to old legends no other evidence. Plus those parts of the country that Duke is taking about are very heavily hunted and if there was anything out there it would have been seen by now. Also you need to under stand that NZ is not a big place .

We do how ever have one mystery animal that lives at the bottom of the south island in a very rugged corner called Fjordland and was last seen in the 50’s and people are still finding tracks and dropings as well as foot prints and we even have DNA proof but no sighting except for a couple of game camera photos which dont show enough to conclusively prove it is the animal in question. The big thing about this one is we know what it is and you guys in the US and Canada see them all the time its a MOOSE.

    Thanks Duke
    Have fun Wayne

I did say that the evidence for them is slim, and I did not say that I thought they do/ever did exist. This is strictly for informational purposes, being a cryptozoologist is about recording myths and legends first THEN looking into it further if they seem to have any validity. I think the chance of there having been or still being a mystery hominid in New Zealand is very remote, to be honest, and the person who referred this too me also said they thought it to be unlikely. Again, knowing about something is the first step of the vetting process. As far as hunting goes, there are people here in the U.S. who would say they have been hunting in the same area or decades and it is heavily hunted and there are no Bigfoot. These may be in the same areas that produce sightings. The majority of hunters that have bigfoot experiences are coon hunters, or others out shining predators and they are hunting at NIGHT when Bigfoot are moving around, so the question to you is, who is going into these areas at night to make certain they are not there? That is called research.

As time passes, I am more and more impressed with you Duke! You are logical, intelligent, humorous, and know how to conduct good, methodical research! Very impressed indeed! 😉

I take your point that it was very unlikely but as you say this with a bit of resreach would have been easy to eliminated the possability
1 NZ broke away from Australasia about 80 million years ago
2 There have been no fossil records of any type of primate ever found or know to have existed here in NZ
3 There are no large animals in our fossil record with the exception of the Moa and of coarse a few dinosaurs. . Also we are really lucky we have no dangerous predators either nor any snakes and only one type of poisonus spider and its very rare that it kills anyone
Just to illustrate how small NZ is the state of Oregon is about 4000 square miles smaller the the whole of NZ
The one big advantage you have is your ability to go and see these sites where there is activity and do the field work., and talk to people who have seen these thing and to be able to look for them. I can only dream about doing that. But the flip side of that is i can do it through the likes of you and Wes and other investigators its just a shame i cant be out there doing it with you guys.
So keep looking and thanks for doing the work that you do
    Have fun
