The capstone and upper layer may well have been made of gold and the sides with limestone slabs, also long gone. It probably got smelted down into other coins and artifacts by the later Egyptians. Khufu gave his name to this Pyramid but did not build it. You will find his name nor anything else anywhere in these pyramids. It was built by some civilization thousand of years before, probably after the great flood that would have been caused in great part to the fast melting of the ice age glaciers. The 3 pyramids are aligned to the belt of Orion at appx. 10,000 bc. The later Egyptian civilizations tried to build similar pyramids during there reigns, but could not duplicate the steep angles and thus built the step pyramids also know as ziggurats along with other civilizations around the world at that time and after. They were built tall enough to be seen from space. They may have been used as a power source and I have heard other nom mainstream theories also like Gene P and Wolf W stated above.
