Large log tossed into Des Moines River

Des Moines River

I like to go to Gotch Park and watch the Eagles. I used to stand in the middle of the bridge for a cigarette before I went home from work. I had done this a few days in a row. That day I got out of my truck and felt like I shouldn’t be there. As I walked to the middle of the bridge I felt VERY Uneasy. I lit my cigarette and starred out over the river. I felt like I was being watched and I started to get scared. It was coming from the other side of the bridge on the right hand side.

Whatever it was I knew that it was not human nor an animal and it was a big male. I felt like he was curious as to why I went there every day to the same spot and just wanted to watch what I was up to. I looked around and could not see anything. I built up my courage, looked down and started walking slowly to the other side of the bridge. As I started walking I heard a big Crash into the river and saw a huge log floating down, then I heard a low huff. Like someone let out their air threw their nose in frustration with a little noise from the throat. The log had dried vegetation on it so I knew it was laying on the forest floor.

I don’t know how many pounds it was but it was huge. The biggest guy I know wouldn’t have been able to throw this thing in the river with little to no effort. I looked to where it came from and saw nothing. I slowly turned around and walked slowly to my truck. I wanted to run, but I didn’t want it to run after me if I ran. I got into my truck and took off. I was scared and shaken. I haven’t been out on the bridge by myself ever since.

Great encounter! Water, vegetation, and catfish! Yea, it’s like that. If I were a giant-hairy-hippy-forest-dude, that would work for me. I doubt it was a male though. The only thing missing from the equation, water-veg-catfish, is a woman and a pickup truck! Wow, sounds like the makings of a country song. Just kidding, ya’ll don’t get your undies in a bunch’ I’m glad she’s safe, and would advise her to use EXTREME caution in the future, in that area. I do know that out in those parts, and into Wisconsin to the east, there’s a lot of habitat where these critters can survive just dandy. I think a lot of folks wonder just how they could do this, and it’s really quit simple; did you ever read Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn? Did you ever live it? Some of you are old enough to remember the craziness of youth, I sure do! Good times!!

David, you just brought back some memories with that little speech, i can remember me and my best friend cutting down small trees and tying them together to make a raft to float down the stream, those were the best days, before the computer and video games, momma booted you out the door on nice days and refused to let you sit in front of that television. It’s a shame that kids don’t do that today, i really think by doing that when i was a kid, helped me mature as a boy and it taught us how to help each other out, cooperate, solve problems no matter how insignificant they were, i truly believe it helped build character in us as kids. remember the days when you and your buddy drew plans for a tree fort and you helped each other gather up the material and carried it to the base of the tree and one would climb up with a long rope, one end tied to your belt loop and your buddy would tie the material and you would pull it up, and then when you got tired you would switch it up. the good ole days.

Hey Joe, and the rest with the kind words. Joe, I think you could have been one of my buddies when I was a kid… That’s what a lot of these encounters remind me of; being a kid-having kids legs, and a kids imagination! The great thing, one of the great things about kids is, they don’t know how to lie very well, that unfortunately comes with age. I remember being scared to death in the woods and fields, but back then, even at that early age, my survivor instincts were well intact. Oh, I still did some really dumb things; like when a buddies brother decided to make a concrete volcano for science class; and needed to make an “eruption”. He made his own black powder! Back then, you actually had to look things up in the encyclopedia; he did! Praise God he never got the amounts (ingredients) just right, or else he would have taken out an entire class room; kids, teacher, brick and mortar, the whole enchilada! We set some of that stuff, about four hand fulls wrapped in news’ paper, next to my old mans’ garage, lit it and waited-whoosh! Scared the cr@p out of us, and that ended the black powder experimentation of our youth! Glad my dad never found out; or else I probably wouldn’t be here to tell about it! Angels watching over me! On the more serious note, the things that go bump in the woods, yea, they’re pretty scary! And really, the only reason those “bumps” are scary, is because they’re real. I’ve been frightened by the unexplained when I was a child. Not a whole lot scares me any more; maybe the govt! Big huge hairy hippy dudes? ; not so much. Then again, I don’t get out to the remote places much anymore. I get far more scared for my family and loved ones, just going to the local Wal-mart! That being said (sorry for being long winded), I do person to person-sidewalk evangelism; now that can be scary! The big guys in the woods, that’s a lot of show muscle. The people I meet and encounter on a weekly basis, sometimes they’re a whole lot scarier. It sometimes makes me wish for a bigger sling-shot, with a little black powder! (HA)!

I just saw this post on hearing a log thrown into the des moines river. I live very close to that same river and spend a lot of time at it. I was up near a great fishing hole i know around 3 a.m. with several people cat fishing. We kept hearing something out in the woods but paid it no attention untill something very large got thrown into the water. My guess was a big rock. By the way it splashed and went currr plushhhhh. This has happened to me twice a long this river once there and once about 15 to 20 miles south. If someone coild help me find who had this report i would very much like to talk to them.
