“It’s Ok Guys, It’s Just Deer”

A listener writes “I was born and raised in Missouri. My first experience came in June of 2009. It was at a children’s Bible camp near Ironton, MO. I was a camp counselor.

There was an evening bonfire scheduled at 9:30pm in an out door amphitheater. It was surrounded by woods in a small valley, near an old dam that held back a small lake. The councilors walked with their respective cabin of kids in one big group to the bonfire. I would say 30-40kids in total ranging from 12-17years old.

As we where nearing the amphitheater, across the small valley on the other side of the dam we ALL hear what sounded like a man screaming, but with is tong ripped out!

The kids where curious. But more annoyed than anything because it sounded like a drunk guy or someone trying to be annoying. We got to the fire, kids took their seats on old wooded benches, spread out away from the fire. The “yelling” continued for about 10min. As the teenagers began to share Bible verses and singing the occasional song. We hear foot steps in the woods above the fire on the hill, just out of the sight of the fire. They where clearly bipedal. It seemed to encircle us. Kids got scared and moved as close to the fire as possible.
The camp director just said” it’s ok guys, it’s just deer”. Obviously it was not.

The stomping stopped after about 15min. It was now 10:15. Time for the kids to go back to the cabins. As i led my kids back down the hill I stopped the camp caretaker(who hunts those woods) and asked “what was that noise? And owl or bobcat?” He said “maybe”

I jokingly said “…Bigfoot” he replied with a grin “yes” he was confident in his answer.
We got back to cabins. But the strangeness is FAR FROM OVER!

Secretly the camp director planned to wake the kids up in the middle of the night for a game called “midnight air raid” basically a surprise “wake up!.. play this scavenger game.. get hot chocolate! Have fun” sort of game.
The councilors where to head out of their cabins at midnight. Grab a cooking pot and wait for a signal to start banging and clanging to signal the alarm.

Just before that my younger brother( also a councilor) said he went behind the cabin to get ready and was met with a deep growl as he approached the wood line. It scared him and the ran banging the pan in fear not as planned!

He didn’t say he spotted “it” but said it had to be very big!

So the activity took place, the kids had fun. It was now near 2am when they where sent back to bed for the final time.

I woke up after an hour or so of half sleeping and had to pee. I don’t want to go all the way to the bathroom, so I just went behind the cabin. I swear I smelled something like dog poop and let out a “c’mon!” As I thought I stepped in it. I though I hear a growl, like a bull elephant getting ready to charge. But I’m a little foggy on if i imagined that part later.

Anyway I quickly walked back to the cabin.

These cabins are over 80years old. Made out of stone and wood. They only have screens over the windows and an unlock able screen door. You can hear outside for 500-600 yards in any direction.

I was getting ready to climb back in my bed and sleeping bag when I heard a loud “squeal” from across the baseball field to the other side of the creek that comes from the dam I mentioned earlier. It was obviously a pig or wild hog, unmistakable. Followed by a tremendous “Rooooooaaaar!!!” That made your hair stand up and feel it in your bones!

Next was crashing of branches and what sounded like a group of wild hogs stampeding through the woods! You heard squeals and tree limbs breaking! It sounded like a lion or a bear running down a heard of buffalo! This was all about 300-400yards away!

Unforgettable!

The next day confirmed what I heard with my brother, and several other cabins. (More detail later as needed)”

Is his story going to be on tonight Wes? Sounds interesting, Did you notice that he said he “was” a camp councilor? No more hiking in the woods for him I suspect!
