It was so loud that we had put our hands over our ears

Hi Wes my name is Ken, I’m from the Central part of New York State about thirty miles south of Syracuse.  I am writing you to tell you about my encounter.  It was either 1984 or “85 in the beginning of January, I’m pretty sure it was new years eve actually.  It was somewhere near midnight, could have been a little earlier or later but it was late either way.  My nephew and I had been up on a piece of farm land less than a quarter mile from my house riding our atvs earlier that day and we had made a jump in a small field next to a larger stand of trees and opposite a hedge row that bordered another larger field.

The field that we were in was not more than maybe 50 yards across in the area we were in, and it opened up to a bigger field that was surrounded by woods on three sides and that same hedge row on the last.  It was warm earlier that day so the snow was very packy and it had gotten cold that night so we knew that the ramp that we had made would be hardened up enough for us to jump our atvs over.  After much begging and pleading with my parents they finally let us go.

We rode up to that spot with the jump and proceeded to jump our machines over it for maybe an hour, when we stopped and decided to take a break.  We shut our machines off and were repacking snow on the ramp but wasn’t having much luck because the snow had gotten much more frozen so it wouldn’t pack.  As we were sitting there just quietly talking we heard some noise coming from the woods opposite the hedge row, it sounded like there were allot of animals running in the now crunchy snow and breaking sticks.  We watched the edge of the woods not knowing what was coming when a small herd of whitetailed deer broke out of the southwest corner of the woodlot.  I think that there were maybe 10- 12 deer that did not all come out at once but were definitely not wasting time getting out of those woods.

We talked and pointed and were kind of joking about how fast they were running across the field kind of scattering.  We sat there for another few minutes when we heard something else slowly coming through the woods kind of on the same general path that the deer had taken.  It stopped short of the edge and we thought we could see a shadow but weren’t sure but either way we were feeling a bit nervous for whatever reason.

By this time we had now gotten up and were kind of moving slowly towards our machines which were not more than ten feet or so from where we were sitting.  All of a sudden I felt this wierd sensation in my chest like I was leaning on something vibrating, then it escalated up into this call that was loud and long, so long that the only thing that I can liken it to is like a siren because of the length of duration.  It held that medium high tone for what seemed like a minute and slowly dropped off.  It was so loud that we had put our hands over our ears.

We bolted for our machines which were both pull start, and after a few pulls and both of us screaming the whole time, we got them started and proceeded to head down off of the hill as fast as we could go.  When we got to the bottom of the hill which was probably a half to three quarters of a mile away, we stopped and asked each other what the hell that was.  We weren’t sitting there for more than maybe a minute or two when that sound came again and it sounded like it was right behind us.  We never did see anything, thank God, but we took off as fast as our machines would go and put them in the garage and locked all the doors behind us. I remember my Mom  asking us what was going on because we weren’t exactly being quiet, but neither one of could really gather our wits about us enough to say much.

We were also afraid that she would not let us ever go back up.  We had thoughts of going up the next day to see if we could find anything, but when morning came neither of us really wanted to go back.  There weren’t any others that I know of that had heard or seen anything either before or after this. I do know that what made me think that it was, was after I listened to one of your podcasts where a guy described that same vibration in his chest before hearing the call.  That sent shivers up my spine when I heard that. Wes all I know is that even to this day, when I go into the woods to hunt deer I hate that walk to the woods in the dark.  Thanks for your time

Ive hunted in that area Deryter and song mountain quite a lot its definitely a good area because of the population of deer down there would support a hungry Sasquatch but ive never seen or heard anything. Im sure they head into the deepest secluded area’s during hunting season. Its loaded with deer though, I got two bucks in the first half hr. of opening day down there when I was younger. It was crazy I was gutting a nice buck and had another one come within 10 yrds and stood there checking me out disembowling his buddie, I was covered in blood and my gun was about 5 ft away so I dove for my gun, looked up and it had took off, so I was like I didn’t think that would work out. I went back to dressing out the first buck and the other one came right back up and was checking me out again but this time my gun was right next to me and I got that one also. If all the deer are that dumb around there Sasquatch is probably rolling in food.

Aww Jay, no mercy? No conscience?

Thank you for sharing, Ken. Sounds like you got hit with infrasound waves.
I’m curious to know if your nephew had the same sensations in his chest.

Now that I know more about supposed behavior of the big guys, I have often wondered if the creature was hunting and us riding our machines screwed up his hunt. Back then there weren’t really any other people frequenting that spot at least not that late at night. So I think that the noise we were making made the deer spooky and harder to hunt. I will never forget that as long as I live. I am not sure if I would want to see one as cool as it sounds, I definitely got the feeling that night that it was pissed and wanted us gone.

      Ken,
Yes, I’d say that’s exactly what happened! ????????You and your nephew probably found yourselves in the way of that big fellow’s deer hunt, and it sounds like he decided to shoo you boys out of the woods! ???? Which is better than deciding to just eat you instead of the deer! ????
The Native Americans say that the forest belongs to “them” at night and people aren’t supposed to go in the forest at night for that reason. Seems like those BFs get pretty entitled about that sometimes! ???????? Also seems like they really detest ATVs!
So glad you both got out safely! ????????
Thanks so much for sharing your encounter! It’s a doozy! ????????

I want to say that I have been listening to many of the older episodes since I submitted my account, and I can say that I am definitely much more creeped out than I was before. I never really wanted to think that what I experienced was what I now believe that it was. I have heard a couple of people say that we don’t want to believe that there really is something out in the woods other than deer and bears and other mundane creatures, I can say that even after the experience I was not deterred from hunting or riding my atv except in that area. But there has always been, since that day, an uneasiness about being alone in the woods even during daylight hours. I really hate the fact that my cozy little world has been turned upside down to an extent because of this. I guess I didn’t rellize how much that it affected me until now where I can understand why I have the feelings I do about being alone in the woods, or why I felt that way. It is strange to think that in an area where there are so many houses and main roads that there would be a creature like this. Granted there is alot of state forest near by, but even that is hunted quite extensively, or at least was at that time.
