It walked slow and smelled terrible

A listener writes “I stumbled across your podcasts very much by accident just a few days ago, but decided to listen to a few episodes while at work. I’m not sure which they were, but there were two separate episodes, one that described the sound of a bigfoot breathing and the other described the sound of it walking.

These instantly brought to mind an experience I had 20 years ago in high school while hiking with a buddy of mine. It was an unusually warm, fall afternoon. The forest floor was covered in several inches of fallen dried leaves and the sun shined thru the open branches. He and I chatted and just took in the comfort of the day. The forest had fallen completely silent and almost on cue, we had become silent ourselves.

From a distance we could hear heavy steps sloshing thru the forest floor approaching our location. My buddy had begun to ask what the sound was when I quickly hushed him. At first I thought it was another person, but the steps were heavy to the point they could almost be felt. I motioned to him that it was a “big, big big bear” just as we begun to smell the terrible, pungent smell of an open septic tank filled with rotting feces. The sound had gotten closer and closer til’ I realized it was just over the ledge roughly 20, 25 feet from our location. I began closing the gap, having fun with the situation walking towards the ledge like Shaggy from Scooby-doo (mocking the long, slow, heavy strides) til I came inside 15 feet of the ledge.

Once I had gotten to this point, it stopped walking (and so did I) but I could now hear it breathing, which I later described as a pig with a cold. It didn’t seem to be sniffing at the air directly, but because neither of us (the creature or myself) were crunching the leaves, the sound of its breathing could be heard. I remained frozen, not wanting to get any closer to the smell as it was very intense at this point and I had begun to feel fear starting to creep over me. After several moments the creature continued its slow, casual walk thru the woods much like an old man without a care in the world. After it had gotten to a distance of about 30 feet or so away, I quickly ran back to my buddy. The creature undoubtedly could hear my movements but paid them no mind.

I wish I could say I looked over the ledge even if just for a moment, but I couldn’t do so do to the fear and “feeling” that some how it couldn’t be. I didn’t feel in danger, but rather more like…it was a path not allowed. (?) In my younger days I was nearly always in the woods, but had never experienced anything like that before. I’ve stumbled across bears and they make virtually no sound, when they shuffle thru leaves its quick motions, but it wasn’t until hearing your podcasts, that I really took in to account that there may have been more to my story than I had originally thought. I can’t say it was a bigfoot, or even a bear in truth, but I can say it was HEAVY, walked slow and smelled terrible!!! If you have any questions or want to talk about what had happened in more details feel free to contact me.”

This, by itself is a scary encounter. Only because of how close this person got, and the capabilities of what one of these creatures are known to do in a case of rage
