It Sounded Like It Someone Walking Down The Trail

A listener writes “This incident occurred in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the Days River Area. It was opening day of deer season, the area I was hunting was wooded with rolling hills and creeks that fed into the Days River.

To get to the tree I was climbing to hunt from I would have to leave the two track and follow a deer run through a patch of small pine trees for about 50 meters, and it would open to a standard hard wood forest with an ORV trail that cut through it. I would follow the ORV trail for about 200meters to my tree, which was about 5 meters off the trail. I used a climbing tree stand that I would carry in and out with me, I would use white light headlamp walking in and switch to red light once I was at the tree to attach my stand. On the morning of the first incident I arrived at my tree about 6:30 am and attached my tree stand to the tree and hooked my rifle rope to the stand and to my rifle and laid my rifle on the ground, turned my headlamp off and climbed up the tree about 10 meters.

I locked my stand in on the tree and pulled my rifle up, and as soon as I had my rifle in my lap, I heard heavy footsteps coming down the ORV trail from the direction I had come. These footsteps were very loud and sounded like it was someone walking down the trail, but it was still dark, and I could not see a flashlight. These footsteps walked right past my tree and continued walking down the ORV trail until I could not hear them anymore. I knew it wasn’t a deer, because whatever it was sounded like it was walking on 2 feet.

Even though it was odd I pushed it from my mind and waited for daylight hoping to see some deer, I did not see any deer this morning. The next morning, I followed my same routine as the previous morning, but this morning as soon I got up the tree and reached for the rifle rope to pull the rifle up, I heard the same heavy footsteps walking down the ORV trail. This time the footsteps stopped on the trail right behind my tree, I was a little nervous at this point, so I retrieved my pistol from its holster and was about to turn on my headlamp when my stand made a noise as my weight shifted. Whatever had stopped took off fast. I still have no idea what it was, I just know it wasn’t a deer or another hunter. No further incidents happened, but I did hear that the BFRO was conducting a field trip in this area in the following spring.”
