A listener writes “I was up in New York visiting my friend’s family. She took me along on a break from school because it seemed like a good way to spend the time off. She and I had been roommates our freshman year and always had fun together.
After we arrived and I met everyone we all sat down for a meal. It was about a 7 hour drive and she had been out partying the night before. I’m allergic to alcohol so I never have a hangover. Anyway, we were full of good home cooking and winding down. They had a cute little dog, a toy breed mutt. It took a liking to me and was the cutest thing. It hardly left my lap since I got there. There was some daylight left and I felt like walking off some of the food and asked about the area and what direction to go on foot. Meanwhile, my friend was falling asleep and headed to bed.
They told me that we were very close to a state park and gave me directions. Very easy and less than a mile away. They suggested I take the dog and that was great. I knew I would be carrying her most of the way but I was cool with that. The doggie had a feisty spirit. She was very alert and didn’t hesitate to let out lots of yips and yaps whenever the opportunity presented itself. I’m trying to think of the dog’s name.. peanut? Well, it doesn’t matter.
I headed out for the park carrying the dog. She would squirm to be let down when wanting to pee or whatever but mostly I carried her. We found the park and took one of the trails. The weather was great and we were really enjoying ourselves. She made a fuss over some other dogs we came across but no fights. Just a lot of barking and acting like a spaz.
About 2/3 down the trail which looped back to the entrance and parking area, I saw a big fallen log with a nice patch of moss beside it and decided to take a little rest and just listen to the sounds of the park. I got comfortable and Peanut(?) hopped up into the crook of my arm. At some point I must have dozed off. Whether or not the dog dozed with me I don’t know, but the sun was now down and she was the reason I woke up. I could feel her vibrating like an electric toothbrush and she made these weird sounds. I can only describe them as whimpering and barely audible. I was thinking wtf is wrong with her and noticed her gaze was locked on something over my shoulder and the fallen log. I was facing the opposite way, so I slowly turned my head and upper body to see what she was looking at.
Down the slope of the hill rising up to the trail was another trail. I had seen it in the daylight. There were a lot more bushes, tall grasses and foliage down there and off to the left was a tree line to a forest inside the park. It was a very big property and I don’t know how deep that forest went or what was on either side of the wooded area because it was my first time there.
The poor dog was trembling violently and was obviously terrified of something. Then I saw what had spooked her. A very tall and bulky creature moving at a steady pace on the lower path. There wasn’t much moonlight so all I could make out was the basic shape and size of the figure. But the park was eerily silent, not a peep from any frogs or crickets or other nocturnal critters.
I watched it.. gliding? That’s what it seemed to be doing. As if it was on a moving conveyor belt. It didn’t bounce with normal walk and I couldn’t see the motion of the lower half. It was the creepiest thing. The color was so black, almost as if the shape of the thing was sucking in any light and absorbing it. Like a black hole. The head was conical and I didn’t see a neck.
Very broad shoulders. It had to be 8 or 9 feet tall. Just a guess. I felt a palpable heaviness in the air as if everything had thickened up. That’s the best way I can think of to describe what I felt. Poor dog was so scared, I just pulled her in closer. She knew not to bark, thank goodness. Just as I was thinking how lucky we were not to be spotted, the creepy thing swiveled its head and looked in our direction with glowing red eyes. I almost peed myself. Maybe I did pee myself a little. It was a deliberate glare as if to say I Know You are There. Absolutely horrifying and I was petrified. So was the dog. I was expecting that to be our final moments, me and doggie, but the head swiveled back facing forward on the creature’s path which was moving away from us. I say swiveled because it didn’t turn its head in a natural way. Just as it didn’t walk in a natural way. It seemed slightly mechanical but at the same time it had to be a living thing because the energy seemed to be such.
The rest of the story is not much more than a frantic, adrenaline fueled dash back to my friend’s house and collecting myself in the driveway before going to the door. I was not about to tell them what happened. I waited for the color to return to my face and my heartbeat to calm down. The dog was already pressing at the front door, giving me this look that begged me to open it. I was up all night with the blinds closed tightly.”

The Poor Dog… At Least We can Speak & Work out Our Emotions With words & Kind of feel better.. But poor animals Have to live with that Image In their Heads & Not Have Any Release From the Trauma. INSTEAD US HUMANS just Get Annoyed if a Dog Vocalizes & Acts A Different way than US HUMANS think they should act.. I hope The Owner of PEANUT is A Very patient & Understanding Human Being..Perhaps Telling The owner Something Scared the dog In that area. So She doesn’t Bring the poor dog there to RELIVE that Experience Repeatedly. ????
