Interesting Happenings

A listener writes “Hi Wes: I live in central Arkansas,. Have lived at this location for 15yrs…and haven’t ever experienced anything like this before. I have lived alone the last 5 yrs.

I own 15 acres, most are open pasture with 2 seasonal ponds. My home sits in the middle of my property.

September 10, 2020…there was something hitting the side of my house…outside of my bedroom, just beneath the eave. It went on for several minutes and then I called, at 10:53pm, the police, thinking someone is messing with me. Saw the officer pull into my long driveway…I began turning on outsise lights. Three dear ran across the driveway im front of the squad car. I met the officer outside and explained what I was hearing. We walk around the house and see nothing. He leaves and it is quiet that night.

Every night(7 nights in a row) this happened just after dark and I was sitting in bed reading or chatting a friend.

September 15th, I was out refilling my hummingbird feeders(dog pen is attached to the house and my dog has access from the garage through a dog door. Looking west is my larger pond that is backed by forest and a powerline easement. To my south is a highway, across the highway is open pasture, to my north is lightly used road and open pasture, with cattle and ponds.)

There was a cow, in the pasture to my northwest who had a calf taken from her by the rancher or she had lost it…as she bellowed for 2 days for it. On the 15th, as I am refilling the feeders I hear the cow bellow…then from the woods behind my pond comes a call…tonally and rhythmically similar to the cow’s…only it isn’t a cow. Every time the cow bellowed, then the mimic call.

That night I was sitting in my living room, house is closed up, when my Australian Shepherd stands up on the sofa and her nose is sniffing wildly. Her hackles raise and she began to bark. I go let her out into the garage and I stand with the door open…she goes through the dog door and turns and runs back in and zips passed me into the house. She reeked! Whatever was outside was smelly and he coat trapped it. Soured/musty/yuck. I have had black bear around…similar, but just enough different. A few minutes later I hear a “thud” on the house. A bit afterwards I hear what almost sounded like voices, but were indistinguishable. I turned the motion light on and saw nothing. I left the light on. It was quiet.

September 16th I went down by the west pond to look for clues. When I came across large footprints. Not an area one goes barefoot in. Took some photos…only one print was one picked up by photos…the others with the naked eye were very light, on more gravel and compact dirt. I went back to the house and grabbed a game cam and set it up across the pond from the prints. That night, house is still closed up. From the northwest of the house comes this long blast of a “call” that reverberated my windows.

The 17th, I called a friend and her husband came over and we went to look for prints. I am up higher on the “dam” bank and my friend’s husband is down by the water looking for prints. All of a sudden that smell was so strong and I heard a twig snap in the forest behind me. I turned toward and yelled, “HEY!” My friend’s husband came up to me and I told him what happened. He barreled right into the understory and forest. The smell was gone. I could hear him about 30-40 feet due west, when 25 yards to the north comes a single whistle and about 25 yards beyond that came a single “whoop”.

The husband came out well to the north and I asked if he had whistled. He said no. I asked if he had “whooped”, again, no. When he got back to me…the smell came back. It wasn’t my friend’s husband that smelled. LOL. After this, it was quiet for 2 nights.

September 19th I set up a game cam bought some fruit snacks and put them along the east side of the house. Saw my cat but nothing else. I found the second print…nearly stepped on it…I wear a women’s size 10.

September 20th I put out marshmallows…they are still there. 21st, I put out an almost empty jar of peanut butter(jar is tied by twine to a shrub), I left the lid askew and placed marshmallows on top of the lid, draped gummy worms over the jar lip…this is sitting on the top of my a/c unit and more gummies placed on top of my a/c unit. At 8:30pm I heard the lid hit the concrete pad of the a/c. I stayed quiet and kept my Aussie quiet. When I stopped hearing movement outside(11:30pm) I turned the outside light on to find the lid on the a/c unit with marshmallows on top of the lid…the lid is exactly where the pb jar had been. The jar, was on the ground when I went out on the morning of the 22nd. Nothing on the cam one had to be 15ft(either direction) into the camera range to get to the items. So, tonight, 22nd, I have 2 game cams closer and facing from different directions at the pb and gummies! My Aussie is already agitated and I can smell that odor, too. Can hear soft movements out there. Here’s hoping to see the WHAT.”

My gosh, you are so brave.
I’m guessing everyone will be suggesting you stop with the snacks. Everyone’s situation is different. After listening to this podcast from the beginning, I would be trying to figure out a way to leave! However, you are certainly admirable and it takes your character to get us to travel into the universe. Be as safe as you possibly can.

Today’s the 23d. If her visitor came back, I’ll bet she didn’t get any pics on the game cam…they have a way of avoiding getting their picture taken. I hope to hear the rest of the story! Thanks Wes!

buy some automated motion lights.. put them up around your house.. from other stories here on this site.. that should pretty much keep them away. They don’t care for the light and once they learn they cant get near to mess with you because of the light.. they will leave you alone.. again that is according to other stories Wes has. No personal experience of my own.

Do keep us updated. Must have been a nomadic clan that has moved into your area and decided to take up residence for a while. I would leave a bowl of dog food out for them. For some reason they love this stuff
