I Witnessed A Creature About 3 Feet Tall

A listener writes “It was 2013 and my partner at the time were working hectic hours. I decided to help give her some space to rest and recharge by taking our two kids (10 and 3) camping for the weekend at dollar lake just outside of Halifax.

We had a grand time together exploring the park and playing at the beach. We didn’t have much for food – just a cooler of nourishing basics and a few beer for me. The first night there after putting the kids to bed I sat the picnic table by the fire 6 feet away from where the kids were snoozing and had a couple of drinks and marveled at the stars. After an hour or so, I packed our dinner leftovers back into the cooler and stowed it under the picnic table and left the couple of beer bottles I’d drank on top.

It was just before day break when I awoke with an overwhelming feeling of fear – all of my senses were on fire. In the dim light I made eye contact with my son (10) and it seemed like he was sensing what I was. We soon heard clearly that there was something outside of the tent. A rustle and a clink of beer bottle. As much as I wanted to assume it was a racoon foraging – the depth of my fear was not relative to a bump in the night. I’m a country guy and know my coyotes, raccoons, bears, and deer. I felt to the marrow of my bones like there was something to be afraid of outside our tent.

Staring at my son, I raised a finger to my mouth and grabbed my flashlight. Slowly – I unzipped the fly of the tent and scrambled out of the tent. Within fractions of a second both my son and I witnessed a creature about 3 feet tall that was hunched on top the surface of the picnic table turn, look at us, and launch at least 20 feet up into the air and into the trees. This is Nova Scotia. We have small array of animals that live here of which none are known to leaping from a sitting position.”
