I saw this “thing” standing there looking at me

A listener writes “I believe it was the summer of ’79 and I was 12 years old. I spent summers with my grandparents on their farm in Casey County, KY and this is where this brief, odd, encounter took place.

First off, let me explain how I got into the situation I was in.. I was a really bad sleepwalker when I was young. When I say bad, it was very bad. I would very often leave the house in my sleep and end up waking up blocks from home. My Mom even put locks at the top of the doors to keep me in but I would just get a chair, stand on it, and unlock it. Then, take my sleep walk. I’d wake up and have to run back home. Typically in my undies and socks only.

This particular summer I had also gone to stay with my Aunt for a few days because my cousins were there and I’d have other kids to hang with. I slept walked there one Night and woke up only after walking into their electric fence that surrounded the hog lots. Just adding this for some context as to how bad my sleepwalking was.

Well, one night at my grandparents, I took another walk. I walked to the back of the farm behind the tobacco barn. I don’t know what time I walked there but I woke up just as it was barely getting light. When I woke up, I looked around to get my bearings as I had no idea where I was at this point. Pretty typical.

Before I figured out where I was, I saw this “thing” standing there looking at me. At the time, and for a few years after, I had no idea what this was. It was simply looking at me. It looked at me as I looked at it, then it turned a bit to its right, walked down the pasture and crossed a fence into the woods. I don’t know how long it watched me before I woke up. Hell, it could have been the reason I woke up. I just don’t know.

I have no great description of this thing other than it was covered in what I believe was black hair. It wasn’t extremely tall. Maybe 6 feet. It also wasn’t the typical size that I hear people describe. This thing was fairly thin, not wide at the shoulders, and seems now that it was possibly a young adult.

This thing was about 20 yards away when I saw it. At no point was I every frightened by it. I can only chalk this up to not knowing what I was looking at and having just woke up. Had another potential encounter a couple of years later hunting frogs with my step Father. We were at a pond that was located in a forest.

We had something pacing us around the pond as we were gigging/shooting frogs. I kept hearing it but my step Father didn’t. At least he said he didn’t. Finally, he actually panicked and told me to run to the car, which I gladly did. I was horrified. I jumped into the car through the passenger window. He jumped on the hood of the car and started shouting into the woods at whatever/whoever this was. Fired a couple of rounds out of his .22 and yelled some more.

Then, he asked me where the frogs were. I’d left those damned frogs. Did not care.

Well, he did. So, back into that place we went to get them. Got around to the other side of the pond where I’d left them and we both heard it coming our way again. This time, it seemed to be running towards us from deeper into the woods. He grabbed the frogs and we promptly got the hell out of there.

Scariest night of my life.

Ok, that’s all I have. Not much but thought I’d share.”

Very interesting. I saw one while living in Marin. CA and riding my horse. My horse spooked and I kept turning her around trying to get a look at this thing. A few months later I heard a noise outside my window. Got up and looked and saw this thing again. It was by our fence eating my Mom’s roses. After that I made sure I was home before dark. Told my parents about it and they said I was having a nightmare. Finally we were talking about it years later and my Dad said he believed me. He said I was terrified to be out in the dark.

I had a few encounters as a youth which I buried for years after being told I had nightmares. I knew I hadn’t but who are you going to tell? It took 2-3 years of listening to Sasquatch Chronicles before the light went on. Funny how our brain works. Ya it’s hard knowing you saw something then told “it was a nightmare” thank you for sharing
