A listener from Oregon writes “Hello Wes, Since talking with you last summer and describing some of my experiences in the woods in South Tillamook County, I’ve been continuing my treks into the area, mostly shooting, some hiking and a fishing trip or two.
I’ve had a what I would call a “forceful break” of what I assume was a large diameter limb on one of my early morning fishing trips, I did leave after it. My wife and I hiked up to an interesting tree break and got the “silent treatment” from the forest until we started hiking back down to our truck, at which point a bird started excitedly chirping away until a “hoo hoo” sound which shut down noise again. This scenario repeated itself again a few minutes later.
Last Saturday I was out solo walking roads(armed with my M4 and two 30 round mags). As my second road walk was ending, and I was back at my pickup, I unloaded the M4 and stowed it behind the seat. I then had begun to put the expelled round from the chamber into the mag and heard what I immediately identified as a voice from somewhere behind me. It was a low, soft voice that sounded female to me, it said the word “hi”, a bit garbled it came out as more sounding like “hoy”.
I literally jumped out of my skin and had my heart stop at the same time. There were no other people there, never heard another vehicle the entire day. Oddly, I noticed at that particular spot, from the time I got there the amount of noise I was emitting. From the pull and release of the charging handle on my rifle, the sound the mag was making in my cargo pants pocket to the sound my hikers were making on the gravel road, the amount of noise I was emitting seemed deafening.
I would stop occasionally and look around and make sure there was still ambient noise, there was. The part that really creeped me out was that it wasn’t until my weapon was put away, that the voice came, almost as if when I was most vulnerable. Needless to say, I threw the rest of my stuff in the truck and hauled ass out of there. I’m at a juncture here on what to do. I’ve been pretty sure for a long time something was going on in my favorite place, and now feel like something was trying to contact me? In a world of advice, I’m in need of some sound advice. Any assistance is appreciated.”
