I Had No Clue What It Was

A listener writes “I just started listening to your podcast a few months ago. My kids and a friend encouraged me to write you and tell you about my sighting when I was a kid in 1977.

I am from Missouri originally. When I was about 7 or 8 years-old, we lived in a woodsy area called Big Bend. One afternoon during the spring or summer (I cant remember), my brother and sisters and I went to our neighbor’s home (about 1/4 mile away through the woods) to play with the neighbor kids. To give you some context about the area ….our neighbor had a mountain lion as a pet they kept in a chain link fence cage. We even had mountain lions that had come to the back door of our house and my dad would try to shoot them.

I remember I got mad at one of my siblings about something and told them I was walking home to tell our mom. I was walking through the woods and I had this sense that I was being watched. I didn’t feel like prey – I know what that feeling was like with animals living around us – but I felt like I was being watched. I stopped and looked around but didnt see anything. I kept walking and stopped again. I then noticed a very tall, hairy thing behind a tree peeping out looking at me. I had no clue what it was. I think I thought it was a man initially. It was tall and thinner with reddish brown long hair (not built like the Patty Bigfoot). I had never heard of a Bigfoot so I didn’t know what I was looking at. I don’t know how long I looked at it to be honest but enough to see it was nothing I had seen before. I ran home as fast as I could and told my mom who did not believe me.

From that day, I had nightmares about this thing for years and years. When I learned later what a Bigfoot was, I figured that’s what I saw. I would dream it would chase me or look into windows at me. In my dreams, it had a evil presence about it. I don’t remember feeling that when I saw it, but I may have been in shock. I’m really not sure. It took me years to “get over” seeing it.”
