I am not was sure what it was

A listener writes “I would often get up before sunrise and run out to the river to fly fish for an hour or two before work. While fly fishing from the banks of the Molalla river early one morning (about 6:00am) I heard some crashing through the brush to my right, on my side of the river. about 50 yards away. I stopped to listen. A little ways off a dog was barking like crazy. At first I thought maybe it was that dog coming after me, but the barking was stationary and not coming from the same location as the crashing. Then I thought maybe it was a deer or elk, because the sound had to have been made by something big. I stood frozen, not sure if I should leave or wait to see what it was. It continued to crash through the brush towards my direction, and just as I was sure I was going to see what it was, the crashing stopped, and everything went quiet. That actually was more frightening than the crashing sound. I started to reel in my line in case I had to make a quick get away, but the clicking sound of the reel was making too much noise since everything was silent except the river so I stopped reeling in my line.

I could see nothing through the dense foliage. After about 15-20 seconds of silence there were two distinct wood knocks. I got the impression that whatever was coming had seen me and that I was in the way of where it wanted to go. I immediately felt very uneasy, and to be honest, frightened so I snapped up my fly rod bringing my line out of the water and to my feet and grabbed the tangled mess of line, along with my tackle box and ran up the bank up to my car which was parked nearby.

I never was sure what it was, but I do know it scared me.”
