Hominid and hominin – what’s the difference?

1homo

The most commonly used recent definitions are:

Hominoids – all apes. Gibbons, gorillas, chimps, orangs and humans .

Hominids – all modern AND extinct GREAT apes. Gorillas, chimps, orangs and humans, and their immediate ancestors. Not gibbons.

Hominin – Any species of early human that is more closely related to humans than chimpanzees, including modern humans themselves. (At this point, this includes the genuses homo, australopithecus, ardipithecus and paranthropus. These genuses can and do change as various new fossils are found, which either add new genuses, or cast doubt on existing ones. Homo and australopithecus are the two most definite).

Basically, Hominoid is more of a biological reference, while hominids and hominins are more archaeology/anthropology related.

It is important to note that the definitions for hominid and hominin have only been formally accepted fairly recently, so many older textbooks, could refer to early human species as hominids instead of hominins, or vice versa.

Wow, this is helpful. I get so confused, it’s as bad trying to keep this straight as it is the Type 1-4 BF types. That needs to be in writing too! Thanks.

Wes, you should really watch this video on youtube. It’s called “Everything You Know Is Wrong” by Lloyd Pye. It’s an hour and a half conference thing he does n he addresses our origins, our relatives ans he even touches on Sasquatch. It’s definitely worth looking at believe me. It makes a lot of sense to me. I think it’s definitely worth posting on Sasquatch Chronicles. Give it a chance n I promise you won’t regret it

I loved his book of the same title…even tho I rather felt he’d gotten a little off track in the 2nd half.

Lloyd expressed his intention to write another book to broaden the scope of the first one…but sadly
passed away last year from a very aggressive cancer. He was a no b.s. guy, and called it like he saw it. He would
have made a terrific guest for SC.

I agree with LLOYD PYE. A lot of the so called early humans are just primates. Esp when you check out their skeletal structure. I like his quote that “there is not a single human bone in any of the so called pre humans. Also. there is not A missing link. There would have to be many missing links to change from primate to human.

I’ll jump in on this. Yes, I also agree. His material is very interesting and very relevant to the topic of sasquatch. It is indeed (in my opinion) worth looking at.
