Homeowner shoots a Sasquatch

Stark County Man shoots at what he describes was a sasquatch.
Investigated by Paul Hayes (The Genoskwa Project – Ohio Division)

I received a report of a gentleman shooting at what he described was a sasquatch that was in his backyard. I contacted the gentleman and completed an investigation on his property located in SE Stark County Ohio. The investigation was completed June 8th 2015. Date of incident was the night of June 7th 2015. The couple would like to remain anonymous per their request. On the night of June 7th the gentleman’s wife was relaxing on the patio that was located on the south side of the residence in the late evening while the husband was in the house on the second level relaxing in the bedroom watching TV and he had received a text message from his wife that she heard loud noises coming from the side of the garage where the trash can was located and advised him to come see what it was.

The gentleman stated that he got his .44 caliber handgun from his gun safe and loaded it and headed down stairs and out the door to the side of the garage where the noises had come from. He stated when he got there the only thing he found was the trash can had been tampered with and he normally keeps a tire on the lid to keep out small rodents but he noticed the tire had been moved. He then walked to the rear of the garage to the backyard and to his left he heard loud foot steps and grunting and he also stated that he had seen a large silhouette.

The gentleman proceeded back to the driveway and got in his truck and drove north through the backyard to a small access road with a bridge to get to the rear portion of his backyard because the yard is divided by a small creek approximately eight feet wide. Once he crossed the bridge he immediately turned right heading south through his yard and once he got to the edge of the yard he turned left and aimed his headlights into the wooded area he saw what he described as a huge upright walking creature  approximately seven feet in height and covered in hair standing just inside of the tree line. He also stated that once the headlights of his truck shined on the subject he said it took a step to it’s right and that’s when he fired his gun possibly hitting it in the left shoulder. I did also ask him if the creature screamed or made any noise after he discharged his gun and he did say that he didn’t know because after he discharged the weapon close to the cab of the truck his ears was ringing and could not hear anything. The creature ran off into the wooded area at a fast pace.I talked to the witness and asked him several questions concerning the incident.

I do believe that he had a class A encounter on his property that night. I looked at the property and he did show me where the trash can is located and it cannot be seen from the patio area and there is no outside light on that part of the garage. The distance between the patio and the trash can is approximately 25 yards. I did look at the trash can and tire for hair samples or prints and I didn’t find any. I also searched the area around the garage and didn’t find any prints in the immediate area but the ground was hard and that area is covered with a car port.I proceeded to the rear portion of the backyard to the area of where he said the creature was standing when he shot at it and we did find a print in the soil but it did not look fresh but it measured twelve inches long, six inches across the front of the foot and four inches across the heel. I also did check the area for any type of blood samples on the leaves and grass and found nothing but it did rain the next day before I could get there to investigate. We did look through the wooded area and did find vegetation that was bent over where something had went through.

Approximately one hundred yards north of the shooting area a team mate found two prints in the soil and we measured them as well and came up with the same measurements (twelve by six by four). The witness did state that his intentions were not to kill it but scare it away from the property because of the safety of him and his family. The weather that night was fairly warm and partly cloudy with little to no precipitation

Yup, Ohio’s at it again! Told ya. My dad always carried a 22 pistol under his car seat when we lived down there. Do you think he had a good reason? He may have called them “smoky the bears”, for my benefit. And yes, this was way before the seventies, firebirds and silly movies, so no, dad didn’t refer to state troopers as smokies. I do know that a lot of weird things went on back then ( early sixties). Wish I could find an old diary or something to help fill in the gaps. I am pretty convinced of this; that as a young boy, and staying out at my grannies with just her and I, that my dad and some of our kin on my moms side, went out to possibly take care of one of these things. You didn’t mess with those hill folks; bad idea, and to bad for you if you did!

I had my encounter in Stark County as well (episode 153 ape like creature) grew up here and never imagined seeing something that still can’t be explained…

A crazy side note after calling in on the show…perhaps 2 weeks after the show…I was on the deck letting the dogs out….heard an insane howl….that sounded well the beginning sounded like a sasquatch howl then sounded motorcycle ish…dogs bolted in and not going to lie I nearly dropped my cigarette out of my mouth…Anyone know if these animals can replicate sounds of this nature? Never heard any instances of it while searching

I remember Coonbo talking about a BF making the sound of a truck backing up using the beeping sounds; maybe it was a forklift backing up….sorry, I can’t remember clearly enough to post a link. It was definitely a mechanical sound vs. nature.

I’d like to get Paul Hayes the investigator of this encounter to do a show with Wes. He has an awesome daylight encounter he had with his son at his home in East Canton, OH. I got to hear him tell it first hand. I know where he lives and need to stop in and hit him up on that.

If all he wanted to do was scare it away and not shoot it then why did he even shoot towards it and possibly hit it in the shoulder. This thing wasnt even threathening his family. I hope he did miss it. People like that dont have any business owning guns. Im not anti gun by no means i have then myself but people shooting at things and then saying they didnt want to kill but may have hit it dont need guns untill they get some proper training

I agree with Sam. Why else would you shoot directly at something unless your intention is to kill or wound. The headlights alone probably would have scared it off. Also it must have been a smaller juvenile to have a 12 in. long footprint.

Agree Sam and Geoff, these pot shots people take could get them killed, shoot the damn tree next to it and egress the area.If you go for the kill you better be packing heavy with plenty of rounds.IMO

That is true Mike, but when you you shoot at something and say your intent was to only scare it away, one can never be certain that the shot doesn’t find the fatal mark, especially in the dark. When someone aims a gun at a living thing and pull the trigger, that person should expect Death as a possible outcome.

????it should be the outcome once you pull a weapon. “Never point a gun at something unless you
Intend to kill it.” And, “pulling a gun is the last resort because once you do you’ve upped the ante to fight or flight with fight being their only real option.”~ my parents

My girlfriend was in Stark county at a friends house this fall. They were outside having a bonfire and she said she heard a weird sound that was either coyotes barking or kids laughing. She said it was loud and was going on for at least 20 minutes. I played the Umatilla sounds and she said “that’s it! What is that?” I told her bigfoot, to which she replied; I’m serious quit effing around. I told her to go ahead and scour the internet but she’s not gonna find a coyote making those weird bark/laugh sounds. I wish I was there to hear them and record them. I think something passes through the Stark County area in the summer and fall.

Stefan…Yeah the coyotes normally don’t bark too much around here..helping and howling I’ve heard (but they sound very coyotish here in stark county) after my fence line is a soy bean field that has huge power lines running throughout..Coyotes are always in this field as deer and turkey flock here in huge clusters…

When I was 21 I ventured over to my sisters then brand new home…she had a bonfire and I heard a baby crying in the woods and my brother in law at the time demanded I stay by the fire…Being a show off at the time, I left the fire and walked towards the sound I crossed the tree line and walked further in this deep dark patch (sounded exactly like an infant crying) I got close to it…to the extent it stopped…I freaked out and trotted back to the fire…

Then again I’ve heard supposedly make noises of a baby crying…then again I’ve never heard a fox and have only ever seen a fox twice in my 30 years

IMO … You do not point a firearm at any living thing unless you are willing to pull the trigger, and when you do start throwing lead down range you AIM TO KILL NEVER TO WOUND. Otherwise use a stick.

    @ Sam T and FSZ

He probably had every intention of shooting it in a lethal area when he pulled the trigger. Then later, after the fact, he became nervous about possibly getting in trouble and changed his story to the lame “warning shot”. Lighting off a 44 round at night while seated in a truck he probably has no idea if he hit it or not. As a part time volunteer range master at my gun club I am very aware of the majority of shooters low skill level with handguns. No offence to LEOs but while observing I even see some professionals struggle to qualify on a regular basis.

Hoping he knew the backstop, etc. “Know your target and the nature of the backstop’ is one of the basic rules, I agree. Wasn’t sure of his target (to this day) and was shooting in the dark (backstop?) How I’d feel about a bigfoot checking out my house (wife?) is another consideration. What is required on the range merges into what is necessary to protect your life. Tough call, but I’d of held fire.
