A listener writes “I wanted to share a quick experience. My family used to go to Yosemite every summer for a two week vacation. We always stayed on the valley floor at Lower Pines Campground, usually around spots 110–121, and we absolutely loved it.
I spent a lot of time exploring the valley, and while I never had a direct encounter, I did hear some pretty strange things vocalizations, howls, screams, and what people call “samurai chatter.”
The first time I heard that chatter, I just assumed it was tourists from overseas. I remember thinking it was funny that people would be out wandering around in the dark like that. But the weird part was, I never heard any footsteps just the sounds.
We often stayed at campsite 121, right by the Merced River near Sugar Pine Bridge. During the day, we’d swim and skip rocks, but at night we’d hear these deep, heavy splashes like large rocks were being thrown into the water.
Like a couple of kids who thought we were invincible, we’d walk around at night with flashlights, sometimes even looking for bears. Going through Upper Pines Campground after dark always felt eerie. Dogs were allowed in the campground and were usually barking, but there were moments when everything would suddenly go completely silent no movement, no sound at all. Then out of nowhere, the chatter would start up again, and the dogs would go crazy.
Just wanted to share my experience. Thanks again for the great podcast keep it up!”

Did this happen every year or just one year? It seems like this was some kind of entertainment for a family or clan of them. Very beuatiful place to camp and vacation, no doubt. I skied at Mammoth back in the 1980s and fell in love with that area, a far cry from the Michigan area I grew up in.
