Hairy Jungle People

A listener writes “My Mom use to always tell me stories of “Jungle people” and “Jungle Monsters” as a kid, and I always thought she meant “Jungle people” as in The Natives that lived in the jungles. and “Jungle Monsters” were like tigers, and other jungle animals.

But after listening to your show… I think she meant something else.

I live in Canada now, but my family is from Vietnam. Northern Vietnam to be more precise. My mom lived in a small village during the 50s and 60’s. The place is remote, the first time I visited home was in 2000. It took me 2 days travel, by car, bus, and boat to get to my Mom’s village from the capital city of Hanoi. Now you can get there a lot quicker. But as far as remote places go, lets just say its out of the way.

When my Mom was growing up traveling from village to village or to larger towns and cities, usually required days of travel through thick jungle. And you would always travel in large groups. Usually stopping at familiar locations to camp or spend the night. Routes were well traveled and fairly safe.

But the war changed things. Traveling became dangerous, so there weren’t a lot of people traveling these routes or going out at night in general. I don’t recall the specifics, but for emergency reasons my Mom had to travel to the nearest large town. It would take several days. Because most of the men were drafted to the army, and people were scared to go out at night in general, my mom had to travel alone. All of her older siblings are dead, or in the army (This is in the mid 60’s. My mom is a teenager).

She tells me that her plan is to just walk straight through the night and sleep during the day, because she felt that sleeping in the jungle at night would be too dangerous.

She leaves her village just before sunset.

As she continues on, she’s being very quite and careful and she’s walking in complete darkness, no lights. Taking time to let her eyes adjust. Her plan is to not draw any attention to herself. This sounds crazy to us, but you got to understand the Northern Vietnamese were trained and lived a life of gorilla warfare and constant fear of soldiers and bombs. Being silent, and unnoticed was how to you survived.

Early in the Morning as the sun is just about to go up. She reaches a cliff, or point (I don’t recall exactly). Its an elevated position and she can see into the area ahead of her. She sees two figures and they are both carrying something over their shoulders or arms. So she decides to wait there and watch them to make sure they weren’t solders. She can’t make out exactly what they are, but she is almost certain they are people as they are walking on 2 legs. And she thinks they are carrying dead animals. So maybe they are farmers, or hunters. I don’t know the exact distance, but its far enough that she couldn’t make out what they were, but it was also early morning so the light wasn’t great.

She says what happened next was, they stopped and crouched. She thinks maybe they stopped for a rest, so she decides to get closer to see who they are. At this point she’s almost happy to have company on the road as she says she was fairly scared walking alone in the jungle all night.

As she gets closer, she is still being careful and quite. The sun is now rising and she gets to another spot for a better view of them. She sees that they are “big, and hairy and they are eating the dead animals raw. She also mentioned that they had glowing, or shinny eyes…

Whatever her emergency was, it wasn’t as important as getting home, and she told me she ran back home the entire way, even though she was exhausted from traveling all night.

She says they were “Hairy Jungle People” and that was the first time (but not the last) she had seen them herself.

Thanks for letting me share that. It is the first time I’ve every put that story in writing. These are all memories of my childhood. She hasn’t told me that story in about 30 years.. But its come up now that I’ve listened to your show. And I’ve also had “experiences” that now looking back, seem really strange.”

    Hello,

Would love to hear the Mom tell the story. She wouldn’t have to have the greatest English skills. To hear it in her dialect would even be more interesting. I mention this because my sister-in-law is from Korea and sometimes she worries about her accent.

A lot of our soldiers had stories of them, especially in the Central Highlands. I think Bigfoot Encounters has some stories on them. Often referred to as Rock Apes as they liked to throw rocks. About five years ago I was talking with a Vietnam Vet. Being not being shy I asked him about them. He never saw one, however his brother who was in the Navy in some specialized role and was assigned to the Marines at the time did see them.

Wow, this was a great story, a few months back someone posted an encounter a scout sniper team had observed a cryptid that was stalking some “Cong” during the war….

Thanks for sharing! I, too, would love to hear more of your mother’s stories and yours. We don’t hear many accounts from that part of the world, though we know they’re over there.
