A listener writes “I had an encounter in 2014 while elk hunting here in Colorado.
I was 15 miles back off pavement down some dirt roads where I’ve killed elk in the past, solo camping back in the sticks. On my third night in camp at 10:20 pm I was roared/growled at by something from about 50 yards away, it was like nothing I’ve ever heard, it was so deep and gutteral I actually felt it reverberate in my chest. 20 minutes later I heard a rock hit the ground and a few seconds later I heard another one hit the ground, not long after that I heard a whoop from behind my left shoulder about 30 ft away which was answered by another whoop off my right shoulder from about the same distance.
That was it for the night, I laid there frozen the whole night with my 308 across my lap and a 357 in my left hand, I never slept and I never moved.”

At first light my ass would have been gone. They were stalking and you were the stalkie.

Nice whitetail! I also hunt elk in Colorado but the vegetation looks much different from what I hunt.
