Chariots of the Gods is a 1970 West German documentary film directed by Harald Reinl. It is based on Erich von Däniken’s book Chariots of the Gods, a book that theorizes extraterrestrials impacted early human life. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Enjoyed this book.

It feels weird to see Chariots of the Gods discussed as some ancient, obscure film. But then, it also feels weird to hear young twenty-somethings referring to the 80s as if they were the 1880s. Sigh….I really am getting old.
I remember seeing Chariots of the Gods at the drive-in (yeah, that probably caused more laughter from the 20-somethings). I also read the book. Chariots of the Gods was a phenomenon in the early 70s.

I am with you Michael M. Saw the movie back then at our drive-in just down the road from me ( Sunset Drive In, Midland MI ) but more importantly I bought the book soon after it was published and it set me off on my journey of ” high strangeness as Linda Moulton Howe likes to use. It was advertised on TV and we only got 3 stations at that time, ABC, NBC, and CBS and I think I ordered it by mail. What the book did succeeded in is creating a proliferation of researchers looking for alternative answers to mysteries that were right before our eyes for those that wanted to look. Erick von Daniken is still active and can be seen on many episode of the hugely successful History Channel series Ancient Aliens which is still going strong for over 10 years now.

I read the first books in the 1970’s. His views made total sense to me. Erich von Daniken did a great analysis of the times we wonder about.
