A listener writes “Hey Wes! Thought you’d like to know since it’s been a news topic lately. This one aircraft flew directly over our house. There were twenty of them at least that night of September 29th, 2024. They flew in from the west where the US military has its drone testing facility near the Tooele Army Depot.

But nothing more came over it. Every now and then we see these but not as many as that night. Strange that people didn’t feel it odd, maybe they don’t look up because they’re too deep into looking at their phones.

A team of Paleontologists made a unique discovery that unearthed a fossil of a mammal that was the size of a muskrat, from a species that was believed to have lived during the time of the dinosaurs . The team led by paleontologist Jaelyn Eberle from the University of Colorado Boulder identified the fossil from the fragment of a jawbone and three molar teeth. Analysis from the recovered fossils was studied and published in the journal PLoS ONE . The fossil was identified to be from a period roughly 70 to 75 million years ago when a large part of Western America was submerged beneath an inland sea.

Paleontologists unearth 70-million-year-old ‘swamp dweller’ fossil in Colorado

The fossil was named Heleocola piceanus , a Latin phrase that meant “Swamp dweller.” This particular critter was excavated in 2016 from an area near Rangely, Colorado, which had also hosted several other fossil digs with successful results. Eberle, who was also the curator of fossil vertebrates at the CU Museum of Natural History commented, “Colorado is a great place to find fossils, but mammals from this time period tend to be pretty rare. So it’s really neat to see this slice of time preserved in Colorado,” according to Earth.Com . A slab of sandstone revealed under it the mammal’s jawbone and was witnessed by the co-author of the study John Foster, a scientist at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum.

Knewz.com noted that the name of the fossil was given based on the slab beneath which it was discovered, as it contained traces of swamps and river channels. Hence the species could have survived in an area that was a low-lying swamp. The area could have been home to various creatures that were native to such environments like turtles, duck-billed dinosaurs, and giant crocodiles, who inhabited marshes and estuaries, as mentioned in a statement to Newsweek . Though certain assumptions were made, researchers are yet to detail findings about the Heleocola, however, based on dental morphology, certain data about the swamp dweller’s livelihood could be discerned.

“Diet-wise, and based on its teeth, Heleocola was probably a plant-dominated omnivore, meaning it ate mostly plants but probably consumed some insects and/or small vertebrates too,” said Professor Jaelyn Eberle to IFLScience . “It’s a large mammal by Late Cretaceous standards (with an estimated body mass similar to today’s muskrat), whereas most mammals living at this time (70 – 75 million years ago) were mouse to rat-sized,” they added. CU Boulder Today stated that scientists had considered the size of this mammal to be insignificant until this discovery as it was not before the asteroid killed the non-avian dinosaurs 66 million years ago that this mammal increased in size. With the new find, researchers gained proof of life that was much bigger than scientists had previously anticipated it to be.

Though attention to this period was mostly reliant on dinosaur history, the Heleocola discovery was proof to establish the importance of ancient mammals in the process of understanding a region’s beginnings and the ecosystems of the Late Cretaceous period. It was also marked as a study into prehistoric Colorado, which cemented the significance of the area’s rich paleontological heritage and the need to preserve the location. Researchers urged people who came across any fossil findings to be mindful of their steps in documentation and information; and contact appropriate authorities to not tamper with the region’s identity and history, to protect it for generations to come.

USA Today writes “Wildlife photographer Henri Olckers and his father were driving down a dirt road in Kruger National Park hoping to spot a leopard relaxing on a branch. “But it wasn’t meant to be,” Olckers recalled to USA Today/For The Win Outdoors. “Or so it felt.”

They were driving on S125 for the first time in the iconic South African park.

“It is a beautiful, quiet 20-kilometer road, running parallel to a dry riverbed on the one side and dense bush on the other,” he told FTW Outdoors. “We were both scanning every tree next to the riverbed.

“Approximately 1 kilometer before the end of the road, we had almost given up all hope when I turned my head away from the riverbed and looked to the right. All I remember was seeing a few spots in the dense foliage, and I slammed on the brakes. I just remember yelling to my dad, ‘Leopard, leopard, leopard.’

“I grabbed my camera with my one hand and steered with the other. I couldn’t decide if I should reverse quickly and risk scaring it off or reverse slowly and miss a photo opportunity.”

He slowly got the vehicle into position. Luckily the leopard remained stationary and he started taking photos.

“It clearly wasn’t used to cars or people because it immediately lowered its head and ears as if trying to hide. Once we switched off the car, it relaxed a bit more, later seeming quite interested in us. After about 3-4 minutes, he got up and walked deeper into the bush where we lost visual.”

Several people viewing the image on Olckers’ Facebook page never could spot it. Among the comments:

“I would have driven straight past. Blissfully unaware.”

“Can’t see any animal, but just love the beautiful vegetation—especially the golden grasses.”

“I couldn’t find.”

“Took a while. I thought I was getting goofed on. I would not survive long in the jungle.”

The spots are what stand out the most, just as they did when Olckers first spotted them. “It was the highlight of our trip,” Olckers told FTW Outdoors.”

I just wanted to give you an update on my property here in NH. My wife and I had off and on activity from around May to November this year.

It seems like when the leaves are on the trees for cover. We finally had two sightings, one in the middle of day with one walking off from 75 feet away in a hemlock groove and the second just after dark.. still finding foot prints and one night of vocals with what sounded like one saying “hey you”. Then right after that it sounded like loud mumbling.. I have a green enclosed utility trailer that they seem to like to run their fingers all over. I think I found a hair near the trailer after hearing noises near it that night.

Spoke to the witness and he sent me these pictures of his utility trailer. He said that they wipe their hands all over this trailer but on the opposite side of the house where it backs up to the forest.

I’ve had one time one whistle at me while getting in truck when I was getting ready to leave for the evening. Twice I had a little pebble thrown to get my attention I believe. I think there’s 2 of them that have been coming around. An adult and a juvenile by the 2 different sets of prints I’ve found. So far it seems they are curious right now and nothing has happened to show any aggression. The upper 3 acres where the game trail we believe is what there using, my wife and I are going to leave it untouched for now..

Location: Tallowa Dam, South of Moss Vale NSW (my encounter), 3 months ago

So it all started when I had left on a Friday afternoon to go on a camping trip down the coast and come back on the Sunday. The drive was about 2ish hrs to the location that I was going to which is called Tallowa Dam, I had planned to canoe up the dam and camp in a valley and do some fishing and hiking/sightseeing. I arrived at the car park at around 4pm and immediately packed the canoe with my camping gear and started the 3km row upstream, I was losing sunlight fast because of the mountains casting their shadow into the dam. about 2kms in I heard this hellish scream/roar, kinda reminded me of someone bleeding out with blood pooling in the throat as gory as that sounds. I had never heard this before so I shrugged it off as a lyrebird making their strange noises, but it certainly caught me off guard. I finally arrived at the campsite and started on making a fire immediately before setting up my swag etc, fire was my priority as it was the middle of august in the winter, and the sun had basically set. I got the fire going and set up my swag and decided to go for a night fish, as Australian bass which was my target species are more active at night. I hiked probably 500metres upstream and saw a stick structure. It was 3 logs that had been placed kinda like a Tepie or pyramid shape, I didn’t really think much of it until 5 seconds later I heard that same hellish scream/roar.

Which then got me thinking about my mates story for some reason and I freaked the f—- out. I quickly walked back to my camp and jumped in my swag holding my knife towards the roof. About 20mins go by with not a single sound after getting in the swag when all of a sudden I can faintly hear bipedal footsteps getting louder as it gets closer to me. Keep in mind I haven’t seen anything besides the stick structure, I also remember there only being 1 other car in the carpark and it was the park rangers car. So hoping it was the park ranger walking towards my swag I yelled “hey who’s there” and the walking stopped. 5 seconds go by and the best way I can describe what happened next is it sounded like a 2 ton elephant ran straight towards me. I’m not a religious man but when I tell you I prayed to god please don’t kill me like this, I mean it. As soon as the running reached me it sounded like it took 1 big huff and then jumped over me, cause the running sound stopped for like 5 seconds then a big landing sound happened on the other side of my swag. Then I heard it just take off running. Now I stayed in my tent the entire night (this happened around 7pm) I didn’t eat dinner, get out to pee, nothing. I eventually fell asleep somehow, probably because the 3km row took all my energy, and I woke up around 7am on the Saturday.

My main objective now was just getting back to my car. So I packed up camp and started the 3km row back to the carpark, it was around 10:30am by the time I got back to my car and when I went to open it I realized I lost my keys. I looked everywhere for them in the canoe and camping gear but couldn’t find them, I thought I put them in my pocket so I thought that must have fallen out when I was packing up camp. So as much as I didn’t want to go back to the camp spot I did the 3km row back again, once I got there it was about 12pm I would say, so I quickly looked around the camp and they were nowhere to be seen. So I then backtracked that 500meatre hike I did the night before in hopes of finding them and low and behold they were hung up on little stick coming out of a tree on the trail which was super weird, so I think what happened is when I was running back to the campsite after the scream they fell out my back pocket and whatever this creature was that I now know what it was, had picked them up off the trail and placed them on that tree knowing I would have to come back and look for them, and as soon as i picked them up it started running at me again, I honestly think it was just toying with me and using me as entertainment because it didn’t actually get me and it definitely could have if it wanted to. So by the time I got back to the canoe and rowed out to open water it had stopped chasing me, and I did the 3km row back to the carpark with my keys.

By the time I got back it was 6pm which was suppppperrrr strange because I thought it was a quick 3hr row there and back but anyways it felt like time had warped or fastened idk how to explain it. Because this dam was property of government land they closed the access gates at 5:30pm. So I had to camp another night, at least this time it was in front of my car and not in the bush, the only car that was there besides mine was that same park ranger’s car. There was actually a no camp sign in the car park but my car wasn’t big enough to sleep in with all my camp gear so I just set up my swag. It was about 8PM and I was just going through all of what happened and I said out loud and idk why I did maybe because it was a rhetorical question “did i even check if my car doors were unlocked before i left to go get the keys”. And as soon as I did that I heard my car door open and I thought it was getting broken into by someone stalking my swag so I quickly got up with my knife out of my swag turned and look at the car and saw harry and the hendersons looking right at me, that’s the first thing that popped into my head when we made eye contact was the actor in the suit is standing right infront of me. Then both of our eyes widened kinda like an oh shit moment and he ran off into the woods and I quickly layed back down in my swag. I didn’t sleep that night at all so when morning came around I was up and out by 7am because they open the gate at 6am. I also forgot to mention I found a footprint coming out of the water and onto the land.

I have probably missed a lot of details but my fingers and brain are hurting writing all this. I’m hoping we can call but I’m not too sure because you’re in the states and I’m in Australia but Wes I haven’t told anyone else my encounter/sighting besides you I haven’t even told my mate yet, please get back to me if you have any questions but I’d really like if we could chat on the phone somehow and we talk about this because I need to talk about it with someone. I have also included diagrams of where these encounters took place. I will also include photos I took at the dam while sightseeing. And a photo of the footprint I found on the edge of the dam.”

CBS writes “After sightings in northern New Jersey, police departments in South Jersey are now reporting sightings of mysterious drones in the skies.

Police departments in Cherry Hill, Mount Laurel, Medford and Evesham Township — all nearby each other — all received complaints about drone activity Thursday night, Evesham police Chief Walt Miller told reporters Friday.

The department shared on social media that members are “aware of the recent surge in drone activity over the township” and “collaborating with state and federal authorities to identify the drone operators and understand the purpose of this activity.”

Troy McNair said he saw a drone several times this week near his home in Clementon, New Jersey.

“It flew by and then it came back, and it just hovered. I said that’s definitely a drone,” McNair said. “I’m just trying to find out if it’s anything nefarious, anything suspicious going on.”

Police address public after rise in unexplained dron sightings in New Jersey

Evesham police are investigating connections to other drone sightings in North Jersey this week, Miller said.

Earlier this week, a police chief in Morris County warned residents of “nefarious” drones seen near critical infrastructure like water reservoirs, electrical transmission lines and police and military installations, CBS News New York reported.

Videos from residents showed the fast-moving flying objects with blinking lights zipping around in the air.

The drone activity in Evesham was first reported around 8 p.m. Thursday when the department received multiple calls. Officers responded to those calls and saw drones in the sky, Miller said, estimating between four to eight were flying over the township. The activity continued until about 11:15 p.m. when the drones moved into Cherry Hill.

Miller described the drones as “very large,” noting “someone described the drones as large as an SUV.” They appear larger than the typical drone one could buy at a consumer electronics store and were able to fly around and stay under control despite heavy winds buffeting the area Thursday night, which prompted a wind advisory from the National Weather Service.

“There’s definitely concern. We do get reports of drone activity, but they’re usually like, ones that you purchase,” Miller said.

“Last night was interesting just because of the wind that was present, one of those small hobbyist drones wouldn’t be able to fly. [The] larger, I guess professional [drone] activity that was out there gave greater concern, especially in their ability to navigate the weather.”

With drones of this size, any area where they land would be pretty conspicuous, he explained.

“They have to be landing somewhere. They’re very large, and I know we’re working with state police and federal authorities to try to figure that out,” Miller added.

I was introduced to your podcast almost two years ago by my step dad. He’s a professional technology salesman and far more worldly and traveled than I’d assume the ‘average’ Bigfoot believer is. But… as an experienced hunter, he has had eerie personal experiences on our family land that have made him a believer. He’s had no true sightings, but after hearing a number of your guests… I think I have.

I’m not sure if you want me to write my entire experience in detail, but I can give you the general gist:

In either the early fall or a late summer evening of 2008 (ending of my High School years) while walking between my girlfriends house and my grandparents where I was living, I was stalked by a large, dark furred creature.

It always kept just inside the wood line (even as I made a wrong turn and had to back-step), only walked while I walked (hindsight giving the impression it was on two feet), terrified two large neighboring great dane dogs (known for barking at everything), and I actually saw it.

As I made it the first few yards into grandparent’s driveway, I heard its steps break from my pattern and take huge strides behind me (I can’t confirm if it sounded bipedal or not). I turned around, maybe 15yrs from it, as it stood completely silhouetted by moonlight at the road’s edge. I saw it had just stopped its motion when I turned by how it seemed to finish its last lean from a step and straighten its head toward me.

It was easily just shy of 6ft and on all fours. From my seconds of view, it seemed like a huge upper body to a smaller rear. But in hindsight, it could have easily just been a hunched and squatting humanoid shape. I couldn’t see its face or the full shape of its head, given its posture. But I know it was looking straight at me. And intentionally very still.

The two seconds I looked Directly at this thing immediately triggered a fear I’ve never had before. Ever. I tore off and sprinted the last 10 yards to the basement door, flung myself behind it, locked everything I could, and slid a can of nails ahead the door. Maybe as a signal chime or maybe just out of panic. I stood ahead that door for close to an hour. Just waiting.

I still don’t know how I slept that night.

Since the experience, I’ve told multiple close family members and tried to rationalize what it could’ve been. Like some family have hypothesized, I figured it could’ve been a large black bear (now rare to the area), a Massive rogue mountain lion (maybe distorted from the view and at least one rogue lion was confirmed passing through the area years later), or a huge stray dog.

Honestly, it didn’t feel like anything I’ve ever been around before. It didn’t feel natural. Granted, I’ve never been ‘hunted’ before. But this Thing did not hold the proportions or characteristics of any of those animals. Or, anything I’ve ever heard of.

Just months after it happened there was a local report that made the local news of a “large creature” that was possibly “dog like” seen. Happened to be associated with a random burn patch in an open field which lead some folk to calling it a “Hell Hound.” I started to think that’s what I saw.

Up to just about a year ago, I heard on one of your interviews a man mentioned he thought a bigfoot was a Buffalo at first glance by how it hunched in proportion. With that and your recent interviews mentioning “dog men” all possibly correlated or confusing one for the other really made me think; I think I saw a bigfoot.

That’s my little story for you. I’m sure you get about a thousand a day, but thought I’d share it someone who doesn’t think I’m nuts.”

SciTechDaily reports “Neanderthals extracted resin with advanced techniques, as shown by a 60,000-year-old pit in Vanguard Cave, Gibraltar, reflecting their cognitive sophistication. Throughout history, even the most primitive cultures have utilized glues, resins, and pitches derived from plants for both mechanical and medicinal purposes. Neanderthals were no exception.

They frequently used birch pitch as an adhesive to bind lithic tools and as a chewing agent, potentially for medicinal purposes. However, the method by which they produced this pitch has remained a mystery until now.

Theoretical work distinguished two methods of obtaining pitch: a simple, not very productive one, by open-air combustion of birch bark, and a more complex one requiring anoxic heating of birch chips. That is, using buried pieces of wood heated with a fire so that they exuded the resin while they could not burn because they were insulated from oxygen.

Whether they used one method or the other has major implications for rating their cognitive ability. The more complex method requires a significant degree of organization and practice.

Caves that are a reflection of the past

A scientific study, involving the University of Seville, has for the first time described a structure compatible with theoretical studies of anoxic heating. The structure looks like a simple pit, and this simplicity may be why this structure has not been identified.

Only through a multitude of analyses and the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team has it been possible to demonstrate its use as an anoxic heating chamber.

The discovery was made in Vanguard Cave (Gibraltar, UK), part of the ‘Gorham’s Caves Complex,’ which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016.

This complex has once again proved its ability to preserve authentic snapshots of past human activities due to the rapid advance of a dune that has sealed its remains.

To reach the conclusion that this structure could only have been made by Neanderthals some 60,000 years ago, 31 researchers from more than 5 countries, specialists in 15 different disciplines, worked together.

Its branches of knowledge include paleobonatics, archaeology, ichnology, geochemistry, and mineralogy.

“They were not the brutes of the popular imagination”

Fernando Muñiz, a lecturer in the Department of Crystallography, Mineralogy, and Agricultural Chemistry at the University of Seville, explains that “our extinct cousins were not the brutalized humans of popular imagination.”

This human species has been shown to have cognitive abilities, as reflected in research showing mastery of industrial processes for making resin as an adhesive to attach stone points to spear handles.

On the other hand, excavation manager Clive Finlayson explains that: “Neanderthals had to go through a series of thought processes, choosing which plants to select and figuring out how to extract resin without burning them.”

To demonstrate that the structure created by Neanderthals is viable, methodologies have been developed and an experimental archaeology exercise has even been completed.

The geochemical and fossil pollen evidence suggests that the resin was obtained from prickly rockrose (cistus ladanifer) rather than birch, a rarer tree in Mediterranean latitudes at the time.

It is known that until the 20th century oil of labdanum was obtained from rockroses to be used as perfume, cough syrup and as an antiseptic in a method very similar to the one described in this study.

This project, led by the Museum of Gibraltar, the University of Murcia, and the Andalusian Institute of Earth Sciences (CSIC), with the participation of the University of Seville, sets a precedent in understanding the technological and organizational capacity of Neanderthals, while also opening up new opportunities to identify and analyze similar structures at other sites.

Signs of primitive art

In 2012, Finlayson’s team found a strange hashtag-like mark on a piece of limestone, which has interpreted by some experts as a sign of primitive art. They collected feathers, but only black ones, from a wide variety of birds, possibly for aesthetic or ceremonial purposes.

“They used medicinal plants, buried their dead, made jewelry and specialist tools, as well as ochre and other pigments, perhaps to paint their faces or bodies. Their tracheal anatomy suggests that they could speak and probably had high-pitched, hoarse voices,” Muñiz says.

SFGate writes “On the side of Highway 9 deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the barn-like exterior of the Bigfoot Discovery Museum has been beckoning believers and skeptics alike for the past two decades. Now, one of the most unusual museums of its kind in California is closing for good.

Good Times Santa Cruz first reported the news in late October, after longtime proprietor and curator Michael Rugg listed the property on the market. Rugg told the outlet he expected to sell most of the exhibits and memorabilia in the near future — including plaster feet and handprints, newspaper clippings, a map of local sightings, and an aging iMac that played the famed Patterson-Gimlin footage of the Sasquatch on a loop.

On Friday, KSBW confirmed the closure was final as Rugg made the decision to retire. “It’s going to be weird for me. Yeah. I’m so used to this, and I’ve been doing this for so, so long. To suddenly have it all go away and everything is going to be strange,” he said.

Rugg claims to have first seen the hairy humanoid with his own eyes while camping with his family in Humboldt County at the age of four. His parents convinced him he was imagining things, he told SFGATE in 2021, but when the memory surfaced again several years later, he became steadfast in a mission to confirm the existence of the elusive beast once and for all.

While on full scholarship at Stanford University in the 1960s, he attempted to write a paper describing the importance of studying Bigfoot, only for a professor to give him an F. Later in life, he took a detour to “sit in a cubicle and push pixels” in Silicon Valley, but lost his job in 2002 when the dot-com boom busted. He realized it was time to return to his passion, and in 2004, opened the donation-sustained museum with his wife, Paula Yarr, so people around the world could learn about the enigma of a creature.

Rugg claims to have familiarized himself with just about every aspect of Bigfoot’s existence. “Imagine a skunk that had rolled around in dead animals and had hung around the garbage pits,” he said of the way it smells. When asked to describe its scream, he said it sounded “like going down the Matterhorn [at Disneyland].” He believes the creatures communicate with one another and coordinate hunts using a language similar to Morse code.

The reason why Bigfoot and its brethren have evaded capture after all these years? “These animals realized if they didn’t hide from us, we were going to murder them all.”

He told KSBW that approximately 30 to 70 people visited the museum on a daily basis, and people raised more than $16,000 to keep it afloat during the pandemic. Though Rugg owned the building, he was still struggling to pay the mortgage, and health complications made it even more challenging to keep the museum going. He told SFGATE he put his weekly Bigfoot hunting trips on hold because of his obstructive pulmonary disease, which requires him to carry an oxygen tank around wherever he goes.

“He went from being open six days a week to four days a week, and it’s just time,” his wife, Yarr, told Good Times Santa Cruz.

The museum’s website is down, and calls from SFGATE went unanswered Sunday, though its voicemail message still says its hours of operation are Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.”

NBC News reports “An asteroid passed through the sky in Yakutia, Russia, early on December 4, creating a fireball before potentially disintegrating in the atmosphere. The European Space Agency reported that the 70 cm asteroid was detected 12 hours before its appearance and entered the atmosphere. The event was seen as a significant astronomical occurrence, visible for hundreds of kilometers.

Incredible footage has captured the moment an asteroid smashed through Earth’s atmosphere over Siberia. The space rock, designated COWECP5 , appeared in the night sky at 11:14pm local time (11:14am ET) hours after NASA ‘s asteroid detection system put out the warning.

Locals posted videos on social media showing the asteroid streaking through the night sky and bursting into a ball of flames before disappearing into the abyss. The space rock exploded in a stunning red light over Yakutia, soaring over the bright city lights and was seen firing off flames as it flew over Olekminsk. The emergencies ministry in Yakutia said all official had been placed on alert as the asteroid approached, but noted that no damage had been reported after its descent.

Asteroid lights up sky in Russia’s far east

‘Residents of Olekminsk and Lensk districts were able to observe in the night a tail similar to a comet and a flash,’ it said. A NASA-funded telescope in Arizona identified the asteroid about seven hours prior to impact, revealing it measured about 27 inches in diameter. The small size meant that it would likely burn up in the atmosphere and posed no threat to people on the ground. COWECP5 is only the 12th time scientists have accurately reported an asteroid before it struck and the fourth to hit our planet this year .

The last space rock to make impact was in October over the Pacific Ocean, which followed others in September and January. Residents in the Olekminsky and Lensk districts ‘observed a comet-like tail and flares,’ sharing some of the first videos of the event. The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia reported that it went on high alert after reports of the asteroid were released.

The agency reported the space rock didn’t cause any damages or casualties, writing on Telegram: ‘Fortunately, the asteroid passed over the atmosphere. ‘The safety of the population’s life was not compromised.’ The NASA-funded Kitt Peak National Observatory, a project that tracks near-Earth objects, also spotted the asteroid early Tuesday.

Richard Moissl, the head of planetary defense office with the ESA, said Kitt Peak’s Aegis system had calculated the asteroid’s ‘impact corridor’ and narrowed it down to 125 miles east of Lensk.

The Aegis system is used by the US Navy to identify air and surface threats through radar technology and computer programs and is ‘the most capable multi-mission combat system deployed in the world today,’ according to Lockheed Martin.

Ahead of the asteroid’s entrance, Alan Fitzsimmons at Queen’s University Belfast in Ireland had explained to New Scientist that the asteroid wouldn’t pose a risk to people on the ground.

‘It’s a small one, but it will still be quite spectacular,’ Fitzsimmons said.

‘It will be dark over the impact site and for several hundreds of kilometers around there’ll be a very impressive, very bright fireball in the sky.’

According to a 2017 study, only asteroids that span at least nearly 60 feet in diameter are potentially lethal if they head toward Earth .The early sighting of the incoming asteroid was unique in that very few have been spotted before they entered Earth’s atmosphere, but Fitzsimmons reported that it is a positive sign that astronomers were able to identify the asteroid so early.

‘It’s a win for science, and [for] anybody who happens to be in Siberia this evening,’ Fitzsimmons told New Scientist, adding: ‘There’s something to take your mind away from the no doubt quite chilly temperatures.’

These asteroids are categorized as Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) because they come within 120 million miles of the Sun thanks to the gravitational pull of other nearby planets. As more asteroids are observed, the accuracy with which astronomers can predict where an object will be years or decades in the future improves dramatically.”
