A listener writes “Hi Wes – Thank you for your recent interview with the police officer from Western Washington. It was very, very interesting. I am from Eastern WA and a true believer that Bigfoot does exist.
Although he passed away over 20 years ago, my grandfather, when only 10 years old, had a very close encounter somewhere near the old town of Govan, WA with Bigfoot. He was on horseback and on his way to school (about two miles from his home). As my grandfather told the story, he began to smell something very rancid and turned to see a large hairy man following him. ( I kept referring to it as a creature but he corrected me each time) He said he could see it’s muscles move under the hair (reddish color) and it was a man not a creature. Also, he said it was staying about four feet behind him but was keeping pace with the horse.
My grandfather said this went on for about 30 seconds or so then the horse began to act up. When he looked again towards the large hairy man, he had literally walked over a barbwire fence and into the treeline. My grandfather told me this story when I was a senior in high school (about 1968) and until then I had never heard of a Sasquatch or Bigfoot. However, he made me a believer mainly because I had never once (throughout my entire childhood) heard him tell a joke of any kind. I knew he was serious. My wonderful grandfather’s up close encounter when just a kid happened sometime in 1910.”

Such curious behavior. Wonder what goes through the mind of this creature while it is acting like this? Wonder if it was about to snatch grand-dad just before he turned around?
Why would it get so close and then walk away?
This Booger either had ill intentions or a sense of humor.

he was probably gonna snap the horses neck if he hadnt been seen. a horse coukd probably feed a family of squatch for a couple days.. as far as the grandfather, he may have wound up as a chapter in the Paulides’ series.

(New Jersey) Great story indeed! It reminds me of one of my favorite encounters on BFRO. A man and his grandson were driving an ATV on their farm. The boy turned around, and alerted his grandfather to a 10 foot Sasquatch that was hot on their heals! They were going uphill and the Bigfoot was close behind. Only after cresting a small hill were they able to pick up speed and get away. At that point the Bigfoot threw a stick at them that he had been carrying, Terrifying!!

I just found out my aunt posted this encounter with my great grandfather. If you knew the man, this story is shocking. He didn’t lie or make up things. And he didn’t tell this story until late in life, according to my grandmother. She didn’t even hear about herself until much later in his life. And apparently, his mother told him not to say anything. But he insisted very strongly that this was a large man, although from a distance he initially wondered if it was an escaped ape. It was only when he was eye to eye with him that he knew it was a man. Very impactful story in our family!
