A strange night in the field

A listener writes “I live in Ames, Iowa. I don’t really want to call this experience that I had an encounter. I didn’t see anything, but heard something. So I’d like to call it an occurrence.

Our property borders the Skunk River here north of Ames. There is around 40 acres of crop land. At the time of my “occurrence” in 1972, I was 14 years old. We had planted soy beans that year. It was around July or August and the beans were about waist high. ( I’m 5’6”, so probably close to that tall at 14.)I had friends from school over that night. Their parents played cards with mine. Living out in the country you really had to think of creative ways to play and have fun. So this night we decided to play “hide and seek.” It was around 11pm-11:30pm. My girlfriend and I thought if would be great to hide in the beans. So we took off running down a row of beans.

It was dark that night and our yard light was broke so it seemed much darker. But not that dark or I don’t think we would have been able to see where we were heading. We were running and all of a sudden we both stopped at the same time. Neither one of us said stop or anything but we both just stopped. And then I remember it being dark; so dark I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face. Within seconds there were 3 consecutive guttural grunts 3 feet in front of us. And sounded like it was coming from 2 feet above us. Then without screaming or saying anything, my girlfriend and I turned around and ran back to the house. When we got to the house, we didn’t say anything. We weren’t scared. It was like the memory was wiped from us.

I never remembered anything about the occurrence and never thought about it. Until about 8yrs ago (2010)I was asked what the most scared I have ever been? And immediately this came to me. It was so weird. Because like I said, I hadn’t remembered it or ever thought about it until I was asked that question. I strongly believe this was a big foot. I can’t be sure because I didn’t see anything. I can’t tell you what it was; but I can surely tell you what it wasn’t! I also strongly believe that the Bigfoot has mystical and mind altering powers.

And to add to the story; a friend of my dads that does fish a lot in our side of the river, also says he saw a Bigfoot while fishing one day. (about 10-15 years after my occurrence.) He hasn’t been back since. He even brought the DNR guy out the next day and showed him the foot prints.”

I was born in Ames and went back many times in the hot hot Iowa summer to visit my gramma in Des Moines….she would take me up to their cabin north of the city… close to Ames….it was on the Racoon River…….a common propensity!
