A bear does not make sounds like that..

A listener writes “Hi Wes how are you today I am new to listening to your podcast. I recently told you about my encounter with the Sasquatch that was on my feller buncher (logging machine) I told you I had two encounters I will save the other encounter for another time but I would like to tell you what on of my mentors once told me.

My uncle Gabe was a old logger he was working in a logging camp back in the 60s in a place called upper Adams lake bc canada .. he told me he had been falling trees big old growth cedar and he was in the middle of cutting this huge cedar tree in the winter time and he ended up cutting a tree with a hibernating bear in the tree… ( as you know western red cedar are rotten and hollow in the middle well the big ones are)

I guess he was boring his saw in to the tree and ended up cutting in to the poor bear as he or she slept, he could see blood mixed in with the sawdust as it hit the white snow ,, he ended up falling the massive western red cedar tree and he could see the remains of the bear, thus being the end of the day he walked out of the logging block went back to Camp, ate supper went to sleep and the next morning he walked back to the area he left the following day were the tree he fell with dead bear in it.

Now my uncle had been a old school tuff Canadian logger told me he was about 100 feet from were the the tree he fell with the bear in it he heard a loud loud deep growling noise coming from the area were the dead bear was now he was trying to see over the foliage and debris from the trees that were already fallen and on the huge stumps and you can imagine huge 15 feet round cedar trees and over hundred feet long lying on the ground you are not gonna have good visualization.

All of a sudden he hears a loud scream and he realizes he knows what this sound is it is a cougar then all of a sudden all hell breaks loose all he said he could hear is what sounds like a cougar fighting the first thing comes to his mind is two cougars are fighting over the dead bear then all of a sudden he hears a loud scream something he has never heard my uncle said it was way louder than the cougar scream all of a sudden he hears a loud thud he said it sound like the noise of a hay bail being thrown off the top off the barn and hitting the ground and next he see this huge dark orange grayish thing fly through the air the way my uncle described it it was like if a person threw a horse shoe.

It flew the air end to end is how he described it to me now this is all happening in a matter of seconds then what ever was flying through the air lands in his direction on top of some debris and he realizes it’s a cougar a huge cougar and it is motionless.

My uncle said he just froze in amazement then he hears a loud higher pitch growl again and see two smaller cougars running through the debris now my uncle said a bunch of thoughts start running through his mind was this a grizzly bear and cougar fighter over the dead bear in the fallen cedar tree so he starts walking back out of the logging block and tells the foreman his saw broke down he is think to him self he said there is no way I am going back there with a grizzly eating a corpse then he realizes he tells me….grizzly bear don’t holler like that.

He said he know cause he has been charged by bear before night passes and he say I can’t wait to get back to that place and look around the next morning he loads up his old 30 30 Winchester saw and walk and to the site he walks to the area and see two cougars young own around the area were the dead cougar still was lying dead motionless they seem not to mind him and he get to the tree a all he sees is the bear corpse gone pulled out of the tree and hardly any blood and he sees a set of huge tracks walking through the deep snow all the way straight up a steep hill he said these tracks were no grizzly tracks it was on two feet like if a human was walking through the deep snow.

He said soon as he saw that and put the story together his knees buckled and felt sick to his stomach he then realized what had happened was this a mountain man that his elder taught him about were the legends true did a sasquatch walk up on a cougar eating the dead black bear and bear the cougar in a fight.

I asked uncle I said how high was that cougar flying through the air he said at least 20 feet.

He is passed on and I always asked him if anything ever happened or he seen anything weird in the bush or any story’s he said we don’t talk about things like that….until he finally told me about this encounter 10 years ago as my uncle told me the story I could tell he was nervous and was reliving a exciting moment in his life.”
