Crashing through the woods

A listener writes “I have an encounter that I would like to share with you. I am including as many details as I can remember. This event happened just over 13 years ago.

Let me start by saying, I was a Bigfoot Skeptic for most of my life, mainly thinking that Bigfoot and Sasquatch were just myth and legend. I enjoyed watching MonsterQuest and knew they were never going to find the creatures on the show. I thought Cryptozoology was neat, but not real.

I live in Minnesota and in the summer of 2012 I traveled to Missouri with a group of people from the church I attend. We were on a missions trip to help an organization in the Appalachian Mountains in Southern Missouri. We were working on a remodeling project (restoring and fixing a cabin primarily, along with many other jobs) on the south side of Table Rock Lake, not too far from Branson. Coming from Western Minnesota, where the roads are straight and the land is flat and you can see for miles, to southern Missouri where the roads are like literal rollercoasters, the forest is thick, and the visibility is short. It was a huge difference.

Anyway, we were deep in the woods helping remodel and restore a cabin along Table Rock Lake. Our group was there for one week that summer.

Each evening we ended the days as a group in one of the other cabins with a time of devotions and prayer. The girls and women stayed in this cabin. The boys and men stayed in a cabin about two hundred yards away, down a narrow gravel/grass road, down the hill, closer to Table Rock Lake. We walked to our cabin each night.

One night after devotions two of my friends and I walked to our cabin. That particular night we had forgotten our flashlights but knew we could make it to our cabin. I will call my friends Sam and Brady to protect their identity. Sam and Brady were both college students, studying Law Enforcement. We walked in a single file line, Sam up front, Brady second and me in the rear. As we reached about the halfway point, about 100 yards from each cabin, in the dark woods, Sam stopped without notice. Brady and I had a chill go down our spine and Sam asked “do you guys smell that?” We of course smelled something awful, musky, and some horrible combination that none of us recognized. It wasn’t skunk, or dead fish, and it was bad. The hair on the back of our next stood up.

As we started walking again we heard a crashing in the trees. Then a log, about five feet in length, bounced and rolled along the path not too far from us. This totally scared us and we sprinted down the trail, scrambled up the stairway, charged into the cabin, slammed the doors, turned on all the lights, locked the doors and windows and then pushed a bunk bed against the door. This woke up our other friend, Aaron, who had gone to bed early as he wasn’t feeling well. We sat along the inner wall of the cabin, terrified and running on adrenaline. We had no idea what we smelled and what bounced along the trail beside us. And the crashing through the woods, like a large moose running through the brush. It was insane.

About an hour later three other adult men made the trek to the cabin and asked why we had a bunk bed pushed up against the door. Brady said we encountered Bigfoot. The men just laughed at us and said we just need to go to bed.

The next morning, on our walk back to the ladies cabin, for our breakfast, we discovered the log in the grass along the trail. This log was rotten on both ends and water-logged. So we knew it wasn’t a random tree branch falling in the wind. We also discovered the fresh divots in the grass and saw the bent grass where the log rolled.

From that moment on I wanted to learn more about the North American Bigfoot. I read Dr. Jeff Meldrum’s book, watched countless documentaries and became absolutely fascinated and intrigued with whatever we encountered in the wilderness that night in Missouri. The smell is something I will never forget.

A few years later I was speaking at Brady’s wedding. After the rehearsal, at the Groom’s dinner, Brady’s bride and some of her friends pulled me aside. She said to me “before I get married to Brady, I have a question for you. He once told me about a Bigfoot encounter you and he had in Missouri. He told me in great detail, I think he is making this up, can you tell me what happened?” So, we sat at a table, much of the wedding party gathered around because they expected me to say Brady was just filling them with a silly story. I told them the exact events and description as I wrote above. The group was stunned in silence and his bride said that is exactly what Brady told her, step by step.

Since that possible Bigfoot encounter I have been very intrigued with Bigfoot and Sasquatch (yeti’s and more…). As a Christian who loves Jesus, and believes in a God who created everything in the universe, and who also has created humor and knowledge beyond human understanding. I have come to the conclusion that the all Mighty God could be keeping Bigfoot just out of reach of humans, giving us a blurry glimpse or tracks, or hair evidence here and there, to keep humans guessing and trying to figure it out. Showing us that we are mere humans and don’t know it all and have lots left to learn. I think Bigfoot does exist, but we won’t officially discover the species because God created a vast and detailed universe and world that we know so little about.

Anyway, this is my story. Please let me know if you have any questions or need clarification on the details shared.”
