I was told it was the Methane reserves on the ocean floor that threw the gauges off in turn ;causing traumatic events

Documentaries have been made about this flight since I was a youth, before cable channels, and I have seen most of them. I, early on, thought it must be UFOs just snatched them up. However this was solved in late 1977 and turns out I was right. The pilots were returned at the end of the show in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
