1869 The “wild man” Attack in Ohio

I was trying to find this older report because it reminded me of SC EP:110. It was the month of January when the Minnesota Weekly Record told the bizarre story in 1869.

The city of Gallipolis, a chartered village in Ohio, woke up to the news of a “wild man” attacking a family of two traveling in a carriage on a road through the woods.

According to the report, the creature opted to neutralize the father first. His daughter watched in disbelief as the terrifying event took place.

“He goes naked, covered with hair, is gigantic in height, and his eyes start from their sockets,” the newspaper wrote.

The strange creature caught the man “in a grip like that of a vice”, pinned him to the ground, and tried to bite the astonished victim. Hunter and prey struggled for a while, diving into the deep mud and “half suffocating”.

Its eyes, the victim had reported, were “burning and maniac”, and they “glared into his own with murderous and savage intensity”.

And when the battle’s outcome had almost been determined, the daughter reportedly grabbed a rock and hit the beast on the side of the head. This seemed to put an end to the fight, and even though the girl had said that the mysterious creature didn’t show signs of pain, it prompted the animal to retreat behind the trees that were adjacent to the road.

The names of the witnesses were not revealed and the culprit was never apprehended.

Hey Wes, just wanted to say that the beginning portion of episode 110 where you talk about two hunters glimpsing two overgrown chimpanzees chasing a hog…

Well that right there. How you are clearly able to stand in multiple worlds at a time, communicating thoughtfully, respectively, and yet with insight and intrigue, is hands-down PROOF, of the degree of ability you carry – there to be clearly seen by anyone who recognizes such traits. It’s why you are as successful as you are, even amidst attacks.

It’s just my opinion of course 😉 but I have a sneaking suspicion that this is apparent to others as well 🙂

There aren’t many words to explain what the presence of such a person means in this world. And even in just saying the word Gratitude, it doesn’t quite fulfill the role. But I’m not sure of anything else, so, .oOo. Gratitude Wes .oOo.

Sounds like the BF wanted the daughter for himself. It makes total sense to take out the threat (man) first. I have noticed in BF stories where the person lashes out at the BF via gun, rocks, branches or whatever that the BF will “usually” take off. I don’t think they want to get injured because it can be life threatening when you live in the wild and are a predator…just like in the animal kingdom.

Good luck trying to apprehend that individual. This story has always fascinated me. In the wild sometimes when a male wants a female that is already taken they’ll fight it out to see who wins the prize. I don’t think that poor man or his daughter knew that. I honestly think the sasquatch wanted the girl and the father was in the way of that. N I’ve read a few other stories suggesting that a sasquatch was interested in a specific female. Also when the girl hit him with that rock I don’t think that it was hurt, I think it was surprised or shocked enough that it totally through him off of his pursuit of the father. I think he was looking for some easy pickings n was shocked when he found out that wasn’t the case

Probably right Tyler, not only that but whenever a girl hits me in the head with a rock my spidery sense tells me …she’s most likely not that into me, and it turns me off and I walk away. Just like the BIG GUY did.

My one gripe about reports like these back then a mans word was his code and if this is what he said happened everyone believed and the huntin would begin!
Now days you could have a hundred witnesses and If you don’t have a body, you are a Liar. And people think that gives them the right to ridicule and shame people that come forward. This is why I say there are probably 75 % of siting are not reported! SORRY STATE WE ARE IN!!

The attack was as everyone agree’s was to neutralize the male (father) and than abduct the daughter had it been other wise than perhaps the horse would have been the intended target for food? Once the daughter struck the alleged Sasquatch in the head it terminated the attack and retreated to the tree line thinking ” What a bitch “.

Upon reading the complete original story from the papers the father and daughter were abandoned by the horse once the attack began; it ran off still attached to the buggy never to be seen again. The father and daughter had to make the scary and for the father a painful slow walk back to town and while walking back the daughter began reaching under her petticoat and retrieving her valuables, she told the reporter that when the attack began she assumed it to be bandits so she hid her valuables in only a place a woman of improvising mind could…. “her private lady parts”, the paper quoted the father as saying he had wished his wife Agnes had been accompanying them on their journey, when asked why? The father replied that if she had they would not have lost the buggy and horse.
