Whatever we heard sounded like a monster

A listener writes “Hi Wes, Love the show, I listen all the time. A few years ago I was on a hunting trip near Woodville, Texas with my three boys, my father-in-law, and my brother-in-law. We had two blinds set up a good distance from each other. My brother-in-law had trail cameras out and had been seeing plenty of deer, which is why we chose that spot. Strangely though, for the first two days we didn’t see so much as a squirrel. The woods were completely dead, except for a few crows we saw one afternoon.

One morning I had my youngest son with me. He was probably 8 or 9 at the time. We had been sitting there for hours without seeing or hearing anything when suddenly some coyotes started yipping off in the distance—maybe about half a mile away. You know how loud they can be.

After about 10–15 seconds of that, the most blood-curdling scream I’ve ever heard ripped through the woods from the same direction. It honestly sounded like a woman screaming, but there’s no way a person could be that loud. It’s hard to say exactly how long it lasted, but it had to be at least 7–10 seconds, maybe longer. The sound completely filled the forest. When it stopped, the coyotes went dead silent and didn’t make another sound.

My son and I just looked at each other. I didn’t want to scare him, so I played it off and didn’t really say anything about it.

When I got home, I started researching what it could have been. Some people say there are panthers in East Texas that scream like a woman, but after listening to recordings it didn’t sound anything like what we heard. The scream we heard lasted much longer and sounded far more human. I’ve also heard foxes make screaming noises, but again it was nothing like that. Whatever we heard sounded like a monster.

This might not be related, but the last morning of the trip my brother-in-law and I decided to sit on the ground in some bushes instead of the blinds since we hadn’t been seeing anything. We were there from before sunrise until mid-morning when suddenly we heard a large animal take off from right behind us. We never heard it approach just the heavy thump of it hitting the ground as it ran off, crashing through the woods. It didn’t sound like the “train through the trees” people describe with Sasquatch, so maybe it was just a deer that had snuck up on us. But after hearing that scream the day before, it definitely creeped me out.

Anyway, thanks again for what you do.”
