A listener writes “I had an encounter New Year’s Eve 2007-08. That night me and a now ex girlfriend drove from Flagstaff Arizona north on highway 180 it takes about an hour to two hours depending on traffic and at the time weather.
That night we drove from the reservation to Flagstaff to watch the annual New Year’s Eve pine cone drop. We got there around 11 walked around but that night it was very cold and very windy! Around 1130 we got back in the car and watched from the parking lot because it was so windy. After it dropped we left.
To us it was still early and we had nothing to do the next day. I said let’s drive north and through Grand Canyon. We left Flagstaff maybe at 1230 drove north the car was getting tossed around because of the high winds. We got to Valle at about 115am from Flagstaff to Valle I think we passed one car going south. Made it to the south entrance of the park drove through not one car we passed. It’s about 15-20 miles to get to the west entrance from the south entrance. We seen mice coyotes and various other rodents in the park. We got to the west entrance headed south on our way to Cameron Az there was snow on the ground still very windy and cold!
About 1-2 miles south of the Welcome to the Grand Canyon sign she said “what’s that?” I knew it wasn’t an elk or a deer it was alone big and black and walking upright When looked I seen it’s eyes they reflected in the headlights white, forward facing eyes unlike deer or elk where just one eye is usually reflective. It looked at us then it looked down. I kept my eyes on it and the instrument cluster to watch my speed. We both seen it walk across the highway. It didn’t look at us as we approached it. It kept its head down carefully walking down an embankment. I stopped the car did not even think to roll down the window and I honked twice. It paid us no attention just walked into the darkness. Its body was black and it was huge and muscular I could see it’s muscles under its hair.
It had a tiny head I did not see its ears or face. My ex gf said she seen white hairs on its back and shoulders. It had to be a male it was probably 8-9 feet tall. I can still see it today it’s back and broad shoulders This thing was huge and well proportioned!! I let my foot off the brake and stepped on the gas pedal!! Before I knew it I was well beyond 90 mph like it was chasing us! That was the only time I felt nervous. I wasn’t scared just had a reaction. We didn’t pass a single vehicle till about 3 miles south from our encounter. It was a Ford Escape a green and light colored SUV. Her and I did not talk till we got to the conoco gas station about 30 minutes east in Cameron.”
