What Amazed Me Was The Size

A listener writes “I work in the health care field, although my training includes a PhD in Biological Anthropology from a strong program in the East and an undergraduate degree in geology as well, so I am well versed in the natural sciences and very familiar with the principles of evolution and evolutionary biology. My interest in the topic of Sasquatch goes back to my early childhood.

I was nine my grandparents gave me a 10 speed bike as a gift. I loved trying to ride it around my house which was perched on a small mountain. It was an old Free Spirit bike from Sears Roebuck & Company. It was red and I could only ride it in the driveway and around the property that didn’t go downhill quickly. One day in early July of 1982 I ventured out across the road and a hundred yards down the road to the cemetery that is diagonally across from our property but still on our small mountaintop. I stopped in the cemetery pull over because my bike chain jumped a rung and fell off as I was chasing gears. I stopped and immediately began fixing it when I felt the need to look up. It was right out of a B Horror movie.

At the back of the cemetery stood a large black figure. It was very blocky and very black. I couldn’t see the outline of a head as the shoulders seemed to come up behind what would be the head. I was mesmerized as whatever this was had a shiny black coat almost like a well groomed bear but it absorbed the sunlight much more than a bear coat. It stood behind the stone wall bordering the cemetery so I could not see hands as they must have hung below the wall which is about three feet in height. What amazed me was the size. It was standing next to a small tree and the top of this creature must have been between 9 1/2 and 10 feet tall. The odd thing was I felt no terror. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at either as my preconceived notion of Sasquatch was that it lived in the West and was between 7-8 feet tall and looked more like Chewbacca from Star Wars than this creature. I heard nothing or smelled nothing but I had a sense it was showing itself to me. It made no movement towards me. Once I realized what I might be looking at, my instincts kicked in I fled pushing my bike with its chain dragging on the ground home. The creature was about 100 yards away and I was only 120 yards from my front door. I never looked back but ditched the bike and ran inside the house.”

That was a pretty nice gift from the Grandparents, although maybe not well suited to the terrain with those skinny tires like the popular Schwinn 10 speeds of yesteryear. My son and myself ride the modern versions ( 24-27 gears ) with hybrid bars for exercise and bonding. I wonder what it is that brings the Sasquatch to be seen around cemeteries as often as happens? Blocky is a good description of the humongous ones whos traps are so large they make the head look small.
