A listener writes “In 1996 I was stationed at Fort Stewart Ga I was part of a four man crew on Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
It was the last week in July and we were in the field I remember it so hot. Our Bradley troop was on a defensive screen line which means the Bradleys were around 150 to 200 meters a part. Scanning in front of us for enemy movement.
We would be out there for days and someone had to man the turrent all times of day. My shift was at 2.00 am So we would use the turrent to traverse rotating the horizon it was equipped with FLIR forward looking infrared.
You can use the vision to see at night or day directly through smoke. So while I was scanning I noticed what I thought was a person low crawling about 300 meters in front of me. When your scanning at night you have to take a break because you would develop green eye where everything you look at is green.
So I looked away for 30 seconds and looked back saw and it laying flat just watching us. I reported it to the vehicle next to us and he saw it too. Immediately we thought it was a scout probing our position it stayed laying down position for about an hour and got up and walked to our right and disappeared into the thick pines. We described it as Chewbacca at least that’s what we reporting the way it looked through comms we were being humorous about it. I was pretty nervous through out the year while dismounting scout mission running into that thing.
When the sun came up we walked to measure where it stood up and it was estimated 8ft. Never saw it again and never reported it. But I will never forget it, we were advised to not report it to our CO…”

From my novel:
The sight of the icebox made his stomach gurgle at the thought of its contents. The Hairless Ones would be all sleeping in their tent. This should be an easy raid. He might not even need to scare them.
A sharp intake of breath made him aware of something behind him and he spun around to face the threat, the hair raising on his neck in surprise and fear. But what stood there staring at him was not a hunter with a gun, it was a child. Wide-eyed, it stood frozen in the act of tying up its clothing after urinating.
It was very small and delicate, it’s skin much like the baby that his mother had entrusted to him a lifetime ago. It was wearing brightly coloured material that fitted loosely on its body. He recognised it as the strange clothing they often slept in to keep their hairless bodies warm.
Although he felt no danger from it in any way, its presence concerned him. He was expecting it to start screaming at any second, but it didn’t. Instead it just stood and stared, mouth open in shock. He didn’t know what to do. Should he run away? Should he growl at it to make it run away? But that might make it scream. The sky was getting steadily brighter now, if he scared it and it screamed, a bigger one might appear with a weapon. Should he kill it?
Nervously, he glanced at the tree line to judge the distance. The movement broke the spell and the small Hairless One moved. But instead of running off screaming, it finished doing up its pants with a little knot and put its hands on its hips, then cocked its head to make a strange sound, “Chewbacca?”
He froze.
Although he had often heard the Hairless Ones talking to each other, he had never had one speak to him… except to scream and run away.
He didn’t know what a Chewbacca was, but it was clearly a question. Maybe it was what the Hairless Ones called his kind.
He copied the sound, quietly, his deep voice rumbling across the small distance between them… CHEWBACCA.
It clapped its hands together and let out a flow of sounds, almost squealing them in excitement. The young Sasquatch dropped into a crouch at the sudden noise and glanced around, towards the camp. The squealing stopped as soon as he moved. No movement came from the tent. He turned back to the small Hairless One who was suddenly standing right next to his leg to peer around it at the tent as well.
Then it shockingly reached out one hand and grabbed the hair on his leg!
It only came to just above his knee but he flinched in shock just the same and lifted his arms out of its reach. It looked up at him and smiled, raising a finger to its lips with its free hand and made a blowing snake-like sound through its teeth. Then it let go and took a few steps backwards towards the camp, holding its palms up and obviously motioning him to stay where he was. Curious, he did so and when it saw he was not going to move, it ran lightly to the icebox, opened it and pulled something out.
Lowering the lid gently, it then raced over to him holding what it carried outstretched, offering whatever it was carrying to him!
He reached down and accepted the package, the smell of meat hitting his nostrils the instant he grabbed it. He quickly pealed off its wrapping to gaze in wonder at slices of what smelled like pig! He looked back down at the small Hairless One.
All his life he had been wary of them, and lately he had learnt to hate them with an anger equal to his hatred of the Rhugaru. The Hairless Ones always took, they never gave. Yet here was a small one, offering him meat like he would to an Alpha!
Tears rolled down the small one’s cheeks and the young Sasquatch recognised them as tears of happiness, not sadness. He felt something tug at his heart deep inside and the small one wrapped its arms around his leg, pressing its face into the long hair that covered and protected his skin. He heard a snort from the trees and looked up to see the old male’s daughter looking at him. Her body was shaking with quiet laughter!
Then his head swung the other way as something made a clinking noise inside the tent!
The Hairless Ones were waking up!
The small one had obviously heard it too, for it let go and stepped away, whispering some more sounds, “Bettergochewbacca.”
He whispered them back as quietly as he dared, “BETTERGOCHEWBACCA.”
Then the small one turned and dashed back to the tent. He watched it for a moment before turning and quickly disappearing into the trees holding the offering close to his chest.

I’m totally freaked out after the stories I have heard of them laying flat watching and moving like a ‘spider’ ….that part, to me, is so spooky thinking about them on their fingers and toes, moving. If I witnessed that I would probably pass out.
