A listener writes “Around 2000, I was bow hunting in Carroll county Ohio. To get to my spot, I had to walk about a half mile through a large field.
After crossing the field, I went down a hill side into a valley and sat up next to an old haul road. I had a comfortable spot and sat back to enjoy the cool fall evening with my longbow propped next to me. As the shadows began to lengthen, I started gathering up my gear and got ready for the long climb then walk out of the woods. Just as I hitched my pack and quiver on my back, to the left of me I heard an unusual sound.
I stopped to listen and heard it again. It was a giggling sound. Almost like a child would make. Then different sound hit me. It sounded like a child’s whimper or soft crying. I found the sound was coming from behind a large, blown down oak. The branches of the oak still had leaves on it and that end of the tree was in a swampy area. Fearing a child from a neighboring farm could’ve gotten lost and was mired in the swampy area, I walked in that direction to see if I could pinpoint the sounds. When I got to the base of the blow down, I now heard a low growl followed by a huff sound. Very deep and guttural. Like a cross between a bull and a gorilla. Now I was scared.
No longer concerned. I couldn’t see through the branches to get a good look as to what was making the sound. One more low growl found me backing up the hill. I move about forty yards from the tree and up the hill and decided to place an arrow on my string and unbuckle my knife. I pulled my binoculars from my pocket and scanned the area but saw nothing. I began to climb the hill and after I crossed the fence at the top, I took one more look back and saw nothing but, at that moment I heard a stick break off to my right inside the woodland bordering the field. I began trying to cover ground back to my truck because now the sun was almost down and I’ve got who knows what pacing me in the woods to my right. I heard sticks break a few more times in the woods edge and whatever was keeping pace with me. Stopping just a hair after I would stop.
A small finger of the woods came out into the field in front of me and my fear was that whatever was ghosting me would ambush me there so I went farther out into the field to stay out of that path. After clearing that spot i started to run and didn’t stop till I got to my truck. I unlocked the door and flipped on my headlights so that they lit up the field due to the low light conditions. I saw nothing and that was the last time I hunted by the old haul road in the valley. A few years later I was bow hunting groundhogs in the field across the road on a summer afternoon. About 3 miles from that spot there is a group who have a steam saw mill and they will periodically blast off their old stream whistle. The whistle had just went off on my left and then as it faded out, on my right, from deep in the pine thicket, I heard a “whoop!”
I listened for about 20 more minutes and the sound wasn’t repeated, nor did I whoop back. The next incident was about a half mile from the first. It happened while squirrel hunting. I was sitting and being quiet when all of a sudden, there was a tree knock that was so intense, I could feel the vibration in my chest! Just one huge knock! I zeroed in on its location and made my way there and saw it had come from an old, hollow den tree about 70 yards from where I was sitting. Laying next to the tree was a big stick about the size of a ball bat. I saw no other hunters or anyone else about. Not many people hunt those woods so I was usually alone while in there. That’s three incidents from 2000 to 2011 in an area of about a 3 mile circle. Since this time, a fracking operation has taken most of that property and I’m glad because I wouldn’t bow hunt there ever again! Even if you paid me! Thanks for reading!”

The child crying sounds are creepy. Good story.

It makes me wonder if they were mimicking a child that was abducted at some point. Just like the scream that sounds like a terrified woman or a woman that is in horrible pain. They mimic; so who are they mimicing? It makes me feel sad.

I thought the crying baby sounds came from dogmen. I wonder if both of these super predators use the baby sounds to ambush humans.

Thanks for the great stories, very spooky when they make human sounds, Makes You Wonder??

To me ,no matter when I am in the woods .I would be heavily armed and not alone !!!

I live in butler county ohio and we have our fair share of bf and Dogman sightings here as well. Ohio is full of these critters. No wonder, its beautiful country here. Of course if you love the outdoors all of our country is beautiful.
Im wondering if there wasn’t an extremely young bf close by with its mama. Why would they try to draw the guy over then growl to scare him away? But then again who knows why they do half of what they do!?
