Hello Wes, My name is — and I currently reside in Spokane, WA. Because of you and your efforts with Sasquatch Chronicles I feel comfortable sharing my encounter and a few other weird things that happened earlier in my life.
Many of your stories and stories from guests started to really make an impact on me as certain things that I have always wondered about or second guessed may actually be what I had hoped they weren’t, if that makes sense. My encounter happened on Vashon Island in 1971.
I was 9 and we were living on the central east side of the island where is was actually pretty non populated. It started with the my younger brother and his friends telling us that their was a bear looking into the Lewis’s house. Well us older kids sure wanted to see a bear so we jumped on our bikes and headed down the old highway to the Lewis’s house. As we peddled down the road towards the house a large dark thing strode across the road and went into the woods. One of my friends actually yelled out it was a man not a bear. I wasn’t sure what it was, but yes it was on two legs, but it was all one color? We got to the point where we thought it entered the woods. This was our kids trail head the led down to our fallen tree fort we called “Logger 1”. The trail switched backed down into a I guess you would call it a canyon or drainage?
Lots of trees and vegetation and no houses or people around for quite a ways. I dropped my bike and led us down the trail as we wanted to know where the man was going and if he was going to mess with our fort. Running down the trail and at the last turn I stopped and looked down to see a monster not a man. This thing was stopped where there is log bridge over a small dry creek bed. Right there is were the trails go either up the draw or over the log bridge where you could go up the other side or down a trail which led a half a mile or so to the beach. Our fort was down the trail a bit. So my first thought after seeing this thing was not a man was “this is not suppose to be in our woods”. I wasn’t really sure what I was looking at when it then turned its body and looked up at me. The other kids were now piling up behind me since I was stopped.
The thing was looking at me with no facial expression what so ever? Nothing. That is when I turned and yelled to everyone to go back up the trail fast! As we poured out of the trail head I tried to grab my bike and get on it but I could never really get it all together so I pitched it to the side and ran all the way home. The rest of the kids made it back to our house, some running, some on their bikes. My friend Rick saw it and asked me what was that? The other kids did not see it but seemed to be just as scared as Rick and I. Rick and I told them it was a woods monster and then I tried to tell my mom the same thing but she just blew us off.
The things I remember were how non emotional the thing was which I thought was weird. An animal or man would surely have some reaction to a bunch of kids running down a trail towards them in the woods? It had a pointed head with patch of blonde on the left side. Other than that I can’t tell you much else. I have no clue how big it actually was, or skin color, or eye color, which must have been black since I do not remember seeing any white in them. I am guessing it was forty to fifty yards down the trail below me.
When my dad got home I tried telling him the story but it didn’t stick either. I had to talk him into walking down the road with me to get my bike. We didn’t go back down in the woods after that. A few weeks later we had another thing happen. We had all bought new pocket knives and were sitting on this ledge overlooking the canyon/drainage whittling sticks and still talking and wondering if the woods monster was still around. My pocket knife slipped out of my hand it sailed over the ledge down into the trees and bushes below us. We peeked over and could see my new knife down below on the ground. Three of us got up the nerve to make our way down to get as the others kept watch. Again another switch back of trails to go down to the bottom. After retrieving my knife we headed back up the trail and then we heard a rustling noise above us where we need to go. We immediately all thought the same thing and went into a panic.
We starting running down the main trail which headed to the beach. We had never gone all the way to the beach before. After a long run we popped out on the beach and started heading south to where I knew their were houses. We finally got to the first house, beat on the door and a lady answered it. We asked to use the phone and I called my mom to come get us.
