A listener writes “The first encounter was on a creek in south central Kentucky. I wasn’t your normal teenager. I didn’t run around with my friends much but my passion was hunting and tracking. I read tom Jones Jr’s book, The Tracker” and I was hooked on the outdoors.
When I was approximately 13. I used to go down to the creek at night and take a lantern and catch catfish. I just really enjoyed it. It was so peaceful and occasionally id catch a drum or snapping turtle that would really test my set up. One night I had been fishing for 3 or 4 hours. I should add that to my southwest probably 100 yards there was a road cut Into the mountain. And to get the road to stabilize there. They had put huge amount of rip rap rocks to build it up for the road. We’ll I could and still can hear very well and even at 13 I knew every animal in the woods. That night something very strange happened. The road was on the other side of the creek and the woods run up to the road. As I sat in there in the dark with my lantern glowing on low I heard something running barefooted on the road then I heard it grab the guardrail and jump the guard rail. I could hear rocks sliding where it landing in the rip rap rocks.
Then things got weird. It got super quiet in the woods. I could hear faint footsteps but I was down lower than the forest because of the creek bank was about 10 feet high. Which probably blocked my light shine I just kept fishing. I was young and I thought it was just my mind playing tricks and some deer had crossed the road. Then all hell broke lose. At first it started throwing rocks in the creek. First small ones then ones that sounded like basketball size. I just ignored it and kept fishing. Thinking maybe fish were jumping. Then about about 20 min went by and I caught a catfish and I turned up the latern. And I could see eye shine on the opposite banking was messing with the fish and after I unhooked it and threw it back. The eyes were still steady on me.
Then in one motion the animal turned its head and was gone. The next 15 minutes it made vocalizations. It didn’t seem mad. Just like it was Maybe trying to find its group or just to get me to leave. The only sounds that I can compare them to are barn owls. I never felt in danger. Before I left I caught a pretty good size bluegill and left it on the bank as an offering. Just in case we ever had another encounter.
The second encounter was when I was 16. I bow hunted my entire life Im now 47 and still love it as much as I did back then. But in southeastern. Ky is the big south fork, a vast wilderness of bear, probably elk now. And whitetail deer. Which I was after. I had walked in on a muddy pretty well cut trail that fish and wildlife kept up. Its called the Helipad.
I guess if they have a rescue from the bottom of the Ravens they would use the field at the end of this road to chopper them out. At a out the 5 mile mark there’s a road that turns to the left so I was going out that was and my dad was going the other way to the helipad to hunt the fields. It was early in October and some leaves had fallen. So visibility up a tree was actually really good. I could see probably 200 yards down. Towards the fields. I probably got settled in around 230. I had climbed a popular tree. Bc it was straight and easy to climb. And be quiet. At around 330 I saw movement down the point as far as I could see. It was dark and as it moved towards me.
It moved like a bobcat jumping from the base of each tree to the next to make no sound. Ive observed Bobcats do this before to be quiet. Except this animal was standing doing it. Its arms were long and it moved effortlessly. It would walk fallen trees when it could it was only 5-6 tall and it black with red tips at the end of the hair. I was watching it thru binos. It looked like a juvenile. Its hair looked well groomed and almost shined in the sunlight. It was graceful and strong. It would jump what looked like 8-10 feet to bases of trees and grab the truck with one hand and you couldn’t hear it coming. Finally around 75 yards it spotted me idk how. Maybe it sensed me. It jumped behind and tree and would peep out from the far side trying to figure me out. After what seemed like.
An hour but was only 15 minutes it turned and made its way back the way it came. Being as quiet as possible. When it got outta site. I got down and high tailed it out bc if there’s juveniles there’s adults please contact me i have a degree in biology specializing in fish and wildlife habitat. And I would love to talk with you about what I saw.”

I would like to hear more. At 13 years old and large splashing going did not scare you out. Did you know about these Sasquatch back then? There is a great old BFRO report of a female Sasquatch jumping from tree to tree with stealth, while hunting hogs in Texas, somewhat similar to your description.

Wow! What a great way for them to cover their tracks; especially in winter!
