A listener writes “Hey Wes, I’ve been listening for just a couple weeks or so but have really been enjoying the podcast. I recently listened to the episode about the guy who thinks his grandfather was feeding the creatures he was seeing. After listening to that episode, it made me realize that maybe my grandfather knew more than what he was saying.
So, a little bit of backstory, I’m from a little town in the upper peninsula of Michigan and have been hunting and just living in the woods my whole life so I’m pretty comfortable with the woods. So back in 2015 I was hunting with my younger cousin just like we always did during deer season, it was about 6am so it’s still pretty dark out and we had been sitting in the blind for about an hour at this point and things were going pretty routine, the woods are calm besides the occasional squirrel running around the blind and the bugs making their sounds, when all the sudden the woods went silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
I looked at my cousin and we were just like that’s odd but maybe there’s coyotes or a wolf around making all the prey animals hide away. but as I’m sitting there in the dead silence I’m thinking “why would the bugs go completely silent?” After the initial silence, it was about 20 minutes when this loud knock in the woods what sounds like 20-30 yards away, and then was repeated 3-4 more times. after that the woods came back to life about 10 minutes later. After sitting in the blind all morning, we went to my grandpas for lunch. my grandfather hunts in the field 100 yards to the left of where we were sitting so I asked him “hey did you hear anything weird this morning, he looked over at both me and my cousin and goes “No…..why what you hear??” kind of in a concerned yet mad way. I just told him I heard some loud knocking. he then told us to just forget it and he walked away.
So we finished off that deer season as usual, but after the season we usually fix up the blinds and take care of stuff for next season. Now a little bit about my grandpas land, he owns 80 acres of swamp, pine forest, and open fields that used to be corn fields surrounded by the swamps and forest. so it’s really great hunting land but also extremely thick where you cant see 30 ft in front of you.
I asked my grandpa while working on the blinds if I could hunt his old brush blind that sits in the middle of the swamp and where he shot his biggest whitetail buck, and he hasn’t sat there since 2001 which is the year after he shot this buck, so I figured id try sitting there since it’s prime deer area. when I asked him if I could hunt there he looked at me with this angry and concerned look the same way he looked and my cousin and i when we asked about the noises we heard and he says “you don’t dare go to that part of the property and you definitely don’t hunt there, now don’t bring it up again” that weirded me out but just figured the blind was gone or just no good for hunting.
my next experience was august of 2022 when me and my father heard this odd howl, whoop sound idk how to describe it but I did get it on video which I will send you. we were sitting in the living room watching tv when all the sudden this extremely loud and deep howling or whooping started from the woods behind the house which is in the direction of that swamp blind my grandfather doesn’t allow us to go near. so I grabbed my phone and started recording through the screen door.
This experience occurred during the past deer season in November. My usual hunting blind had collapsed, and having not hunted for over five years since my time in the Marines, it was natural that upon returning home, I wanted to hunt. so I decided to use my grandfathers swamp blind, the one he told me not to go to. Now this is around 5pm I walk in to the blind and get situated, I was sitting there for about an hour and a half when I start hearing a grunting sound almost like a bear, the woods are dead silent, not a bug humming, when I notice this hairy bear like animal by a big toppled over pine tree and this tree had been dead for awhile so it was reddish brown and this animal was crouched half behind it looking towards me, I grabbed my binoculars and looked at this thing, when I looked at it i could see it wasn’t a bear.
It then stood up on 2 feet and I’m about 50 yards from this thing. when this thing stood up it was like nothing i had ever seen before, it was massive and just super muscular. I think I might have jumped in my chair when it stood up because it turned away and started running and this thing was so fast, it was there one second and gone the next. I sat there in silence just trying to rationalize what I just saw, about 5 minutes after it ran away I heard this blood curdling scream that made me freeze, i then called my grandpa to pick me up and he asked where I was so I told him his old blind, after i told him where i was he hung up and was there so fast in his ranger, as I was getting into the side by side we heard that thing scream from what sounded like right next to us, we drove off so fast, as were leaving my grandpa looked over at me and said “you seen it didn’t you”
I then knew, I should’ve listened.”
