Unsettling Sounds

A listener writes “I live about 20 miles west of the Pacific Crest Trail near the San Bernardino Forest, in So Cal, and there is something in the hills above my home that makes very unsettling sounds.

I hear it about once a month or so, any idea what this is? I hope its something “normal” but I have no clue.

The thing is, its about 15 times louder than the coyotes that typically howl, and when this thing is howling, the coyotes don’t say a peep.”

I personally think it is a Coyote, but I can understand why the listener started recording. We have been playing the known animal sounds game and I wanted to see if the members could help this listener out. I have included the original video and one I have amplified. Post your thoughts below:

I think it’s just a known animal. I thought it was gonna sound stranger before I heard it. Coyotes , raccoons, mountain lions make some strange sounds.

Is he walking on balloons filled with FunYuns while wearing Cozy Slides? I find that even more strange and fascinating than the barks and howls.

Wait, is this another Mandela effect?.. I coulda swore those things were spelled Fonions? Funions?

Idk man… FunYuns just seems more like a brand of fortune cookie to me all the sudden 😳…😬 definitely not an overly salty, oniony hooped shaped snack/potential costume prop/possible game I knew and loved as a child;)

Since it also barks between howls, I googled it and foxes bark to try to contact other foxes. I think it might be a fox. I heard one once and it was odd sounding and loud.
