My encounter with “The Green Man”

“My name is Mark, I would like to start by saying that this website is awesome.

I listen every week and I am totally transfixed by peoples experiences with bigfoot/sasquatch.I have listened to over 100 cases and I can relate to some of the fear these people have felt.

I now live in New Zealand, but originally I lived in England near London, in a town called High Wycombe. My encounter involves the legendary Green Man. The Green Man is a legend of old, and dates back thousands of years just like the native American stories of sasquatch. In my case I grew up next to the Chiltern hills, which span across the southwest to the northwest of London. It is a very dense wooded area and has many legends of the Green Man, Herne the hunter, jack ‘o’ lantern. Willo the wisp, Jack ‘o’ the Green etc. Some parts of the UK were not inhabited until the late 1800’s so forestry was quite big in England.

I was 6 years old when I had my encounter, it happened behind my house where there was a wooded area that led out of my town towards the country side. I was with some older boys who were carrying a ladder to erect a swing on a tree in the middle of this wooded area, there was a meadow full of long grass but in a clearing in the woods. Once we had erected the swing and had goofed around for a bit, the bigger boys had decided it was time to head home. I was the last one to leave.

I can remember following the bigger boys at a distance maybe 20 yards ahead of me. I don’t know what made me stop and look to my left, but on the edge of the meadow beside a large tree there was a huge figure, I remember craning my neck to look up at the creatures face, now I estimate 7-8 feet tall. The creature had lots of long hair draping down from its body which was full of twigs and leaves (like a guilly suit). The face was huge, deep set eyes, the long thin lips were open and it was smiling at me, I thought it was smiling but the rest of it’s face wasn’t, know I think it was showing it’s teeth. I was literally 10 feet away from this thing and I ran, I ran as fast as I could and caught the bigger boys, by this time they were nearing the edge of the woods. I never told anyone about this sighting, for years afterwards I would have nightmares about this creature coming through the woods coming to get me. I would have nightmares that this thing was in our house downstairs. When I laid on the pillow My heart beat would sound like it’s foot steps coming to get me. It really did shake me up, I had no confidence growing up, and I couldn’t get this image out of my head.

Some other people have seen this creature but it has been at night, they mistook it for a ghost.”

Poor guy; he needs to get over here and hang out with some good ol-boys for a while. Learn to hunt, fish and just plain shoot some targets.! Nothing quite like terrifying some paper and cardboard, to get your confidence up! I think a sure cure would be for him to spend a week or so in the bush with Brother Bob, and the rest of those cool, crazy Texans!

Lots of cool spirits and stuff in jolly ole England. Spent a week there once and man was it great. Awesome story Mark. I’m glad the green monster didn’t get his paws on you.

Haha again with the First nonsense but not actually as you technically are not commenting….the commenters should focus on supporting the stories being told as it is a big step to come forward and share what in most cases is a traumatic experience. Wes, I would hate to see less stories as the authors may be nervous to read that their stories are not being taken seriously, but a forum to say first. We as a group need to focus on encouraging those that do come forward.

7th Wow, coming down on a little fun. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in your family were everything was probably strict. God for bid anyone from having a little harmless fun in this world. This “first” thing I believe was started by a member name Tyler who also added his positive comments and he was extremely supportive of Wes, SC and the guest that told of their encounters. Though I may agree with just saying first with no comment probably isn’t the best, it still allows for a little fun in a world were the group as a whole is very combative against each other’s point of view. So for those that have nothing else going on in their life but to be so critical of others having a bit of fun learn a little patience because I’m sure there are people that have to be patient with you! To Jon F, carry on and add a comment or two to please our elders.

I find the human behavior on this site to be just as interesting as the sasquatch encounters themselves…lol!

It’s also fascinating to see all the different perspectives from the commenters. Personally, I think it’s silly that we are engaging in an quasi-pseudo-argument about the “First” and “Second” comments. We have all types of personalities here, come from different backgrounds, and are at different stages in our lives, non better or worse than the other.

From my perspective, I see the site as a comfortable and welcoming home for sasquatch enthusiasts…a mature and productive haven, yet lighthearted and very thankful for each other. If I was new to the site and had potential interst in sharing my story, I might be hesitant if everyone here behaved too strict and serious (IMO). As long as no one writes blatantly rude comments with accusations and vulgarity, then we’re all good. 🙂

            JO is kicking it.
            Cool assessment Ma’am, respectfully submitted.
Lighten up on us uptights Mr. Jeffrey 🙂

I agree with Steve. This business of I’m first is distracting at best and embarrassing at worst. The “kids” doing this silliness need to find something else to do. They obviously aren’t here for the stories. And the green man story was a good one. Awful for a young child though.

I always thought there was something faintly disturbing about the Green Man. It should have been obvious that the “man” hiding in the foliage is something else altogether. Thanks for sharing this story.

Scary account!! 10 feet away and showing teeth. I recall a wood carving from England showing a knight slaying a large hairy monster in the Middle ages. We know these Homins Bigfoot, Yeti , Almas…. are masters of concealment. so why not? in England in the 20th century? Numerous accounts of these creatures are reported being sighted in the suburbs of major cities in the US including N.Y.C.

I took a report in Eastern Mass.. This creature was covered with debris and green w/gray hair underneath…… I eventually figured out why it was green………..

    Hi Mark,

My wife (I’m on her account) had a sighting of a similar being up in North Wales a few years ago. It was standing on the edge of a forest on a lonely road across a high moor early one morning. It was still, but was watching her drive by. She described it as a Green Man. Have you heard of a ‘wood wose’ before? Your creature sounds very similar.
