Tonight I speak with Zach who shares with us a recent encounter he had while out for a hike. Zach also talks about strange things going on around his home. Zach said “My home and where I was hiking are close in distance, maybe 10min apart from each other. We have had a lot of strange things going on at the home for many years, my mother is convinced we have had a peeper for many years and he only comes around certain times of the year, which makes no sense.”
A Zach writes “I would like to talk to you about something that happened to me in the state game area. I would also about things that are happening around my home. I suppose I’ll start with one of the more recent things; this happened about two years ago while I was looking for a hammock spot on state land. I was 19 at the time and was having a hard time in life, I decided to explore this little patch of woods that I had been eye-balling for a while. It was a beautiful day. I believe it was around late May, it was about noon.
I drove my car down this little drive that led into the woods. Got out and started walking to the outskirts of the woods, Going in the opposite direction of the road. Anyway I started walking around the outskirts looking for a good grouping of trees to hang a hammock for the next time my friends and I would go hiking. So I’m walking and the elevation started to drop. I got this weird vulnerable feeling.
I remember thinking “now no one can see me”. But whatever I kept on going, the weeds got taller as the elevation dropped. I got a very slight smell of death and the wind wasn’t blowing, so i figured it wasn’t coming from the road, and that I’d probably pass a coyote kill in the next few steps. But to my surprise there was nothing.
At that moment a mean gnarly growl came from the woods like 3 ft away from me at like my thigh level. Right after it growled it moved off into the woods. It sounded like whatever it was, it sounded like it was sprawled out and covered a decent space. I quickly lifted my leg and thought “oh f#@k a coyote”. “I cant believe I ran into a mother coyote out here” I thought. So at this point i blew it off; I reached the corner of the woods ( still looking for a spot). But when i turned the corner i just got this feeling of fear. I was not expecting to see what was in front of me; the path I was walking on became overgrown with tall weeds and bushes that stuck out from the woods.
Also there were bushes and shrubs growing in the tall grass field around the trail. So dense woods to my left and tall weeds and shrubs to my right and also picker bushes all around. I thought about running into the open field. But decided against it because there was no way I could out run a coyote. So I kept going forward along the edge of this woods. I went to the path was completely overgrown and I couldn’t see my next steps( because the path got completely overgrown by weeds).
I felt like I was in a trap.Suddenly this coyote came right at me on an angle from deeper inside the woods. It went passed the point were I thought it would stop. I didn’t have my knife or my phone cause i thought I’d only be out there 20 mins-top. But it came right me to the point were I just balled up my fists and, that’s all i could do!
Then it stopped like 10-15 feet away, I could feel it staring at me but I couldn’t see it! And i knew it was right right there! It went through dense bushes like they weren’t even there. So its stopped looking at me; then it non-saluntely goes off on an angle into the woods but going in front of me.
At that moment I thought I wasn’t going to make it back to my car. I felt like the thing distracted me while another one moved in behind me, and was somewhere hiding in the grass. I felt utter doom and dread at that moment. I felt like the coyote in the woods was moving around in front of me, and was gonna burst out of the weeds at my legs.
So I decided that if I was gonna die I was gonna die making a move for my life. So I decided to go through the weeds in front of me before the coyote could position itself. As I swam through the tall weeds, my head was on a swivel looking behind me and to my sides ( looking for the other coyote). At this point I was walking towards the road i first came in on, and the thought of going to the road and hoping someone would drive by crossed my mind. But the thought of coyotes dragging me down on the road also crossed my mind. So as the woods to my left got less dense, I decided to go in, thinking that if I got attacked I could maybe climb a tree quick. So I’m in the woods trying to be as silent as possible.
I’m about 30 ft in when I turned around to see if I could see coyotes searching for me in the weeds. I didn’t see anything and thought that was weird. Wes, as I turned my head to take my next step, on the corner of my eye I saw this jet-black creature glide from one tree to another tree further in woods, effortlessly ( it was close to the corner of the woods, the area where that coyote came at me). It was following me, Like it was making sure i was leaving or something. I just said to myself “Nope! Nope! didn’t see anything your crazy.”
At that point I didn’t care about being quiet. I got to my car finally. Closed the door, and I looked up into the trees but didn’t see anything but I felt like i was being watched. Then i just brushed it off and never went in there again.”

When is this show coming out? I really want to listen to it.

Well, bless you young one… I can relate, but I never saw anything at all, just that “weird vulnerable feeling”, and leaving finally, after hearing “leave” in my head several times. I was younger than you were then, and tired of all the noise and crowding at home. I just wanted to be alone in the woods. How many times have we all been watched by creatures that aren’t supposed to exist? And how many researchers fail to look up when trailing BF? Looking forward to your encounter on SC.

Coyotes are so frightening when they are on a hunt which is most of the time, here in Orange County, Ca. we’ve been told to “adjust” to them now that there here, killing dogs, cats and snatching a child if they get a chance. We all need to “adjust” them back to the desert where they belong… Thank You for your story…
Alexander F
Karen C, coyotes are entirely harmless. There has been less than 5 documented cases of a coyote killing a human in the recorded history of North America…. That means more Siberian tigers have killed humans in American in the last 200 years than coyotes.
Thankfully, they have entirely colonized Chicago, where I live–a city that has, for the second time in three years, been kinged as the most rat-infested city in the country. More thanks that the city just passed an ordinance that no coyotes shall be harmed in the city. In fact, they are now protected–b/c they EAT RATS.
No idea why they are so villainized. They’re 30 lb dogs. They’re not wolves. They do not hunt in packs. They don’t even hunt deer, normally–and, I sure wish they did, with the insane overpopulation we have of whitetails in the Midwest (which destroy crops and forests and everything in between…).
They are entirely harmless, outside of being a wild animal which deserves the respect wild animals get, or should receive. If you don’t want your dog or cat eaten by an ambitious coyote, don’t leave it out at night. That’s it. Not so hard. Not to mention, we’re on their turf–not the other way around.

this the new show?

You’re absolutely right Alexander. In packs they can be much more aggressive however coyotes are opportunistic hunters / scavengers. I’ve never heard of a coyote attacking and killing a human. People fear what they don’t know.
Alexander F
So true, Martin Z! So very true! I think that’s why we’re all hear–b/c that fear of the unknown also drives some amazing storytelling and tales. Isn’t that exactly what sasquatch is for all of us: That quest to find the unknown?
I know, for me, he has to live right in that sweet-spot between real and mythos. If there ever was documented proof, well, this stops being interesting in a heartbeat. (That’s not to say I would be entirely against that.) So, having just grainy videos and anecdotes is perfect.

here** shame on this editor…. hear=podcast / here=right here … duh
