Tonight: New Mexico Encounter

A listener writes “I was driving home at about 1:30 in the morning. I think it was October and about 2004.

I pulled up to a little winding road that I would h head downhill and crossing a creek by the canyon then leads up to the main road. But when I got to the one lane road, a huge pile of hay was on the road. I was so confused. I had an 86 suburban and I pulled right up to this pile of hay that was in front of a large dumpster and pretty much occupying the whole lane.

In my 86 suburban this pile of hay was taller than my hood. I pulled all the way up to it. It was straw like and teepeed. Although very wide it was like a pile of hay more narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. This pile of hay turned and made eye contact with me. I was so close and yet I really can’t remember any features of the face except that all I could see was eyes. I froze. What I thought was a pile of hay is a grizzly bear. A grizzly bear that in that moment I thought he was going to make a fist and slam the hood of my truck. I guess I saw anger in its eyes and that’s what I imagined would happen next but instead he looked away irritated, stood up and walk into the forest. I can’t remember the physique. I think I was so terrified I didn’t watch him walk away.

So this grizzly(in my mind at the time it was a grizzly)was kneeling, crouching or sitting, and it was eye level with me in my 86 suburban. Then it stood up and it doubled it seemed like. Being so naive I got home and was blown away by the huge bear I just saw that looked like hay and stood up and walk away. I retold my experience to my ex and some friends.

I remember how they would just look at me so confused and just move on to something else in conversation or the only other response was we don’t have grizzly bear here in Nm. I never really brought it up again because I felt so ridiculous the first time I told anyone. If the opportunity arose, I might consider being hypnotized to recall his features. I just think I was so scared, I’m the type to pull the covers over my head and ignore whatever until the morning. So I think I may have just ignored or suppressed details of the encounter because it made no sense to me.”

I also speak to the witnesses husband who shares with us some strange encounters he had while hunting in the mountains of New Mexico. One of his encounter is very strange and you will not want to miss it.

WHOA! Don’t think you’re alone there… many people have said they felt ridiculous, ridiculed, ignored, etc. But, telling your story here is great! Wes seems to know how to speak with people. He pulls out details they themselves are amazed to remember. Good job! I hope you’ll share your experience on the episode program with Wes. You had me going there, thinking the squatch made a little house with straw in the road. Ha. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Yes, the human mind tries it’s best to justify what it is actually seeing. It will imagine what the eyes see to be something that registers logically, even though in actuality it is something completely different that defy’s one’s perceived reality…

Nice try in telling your story to your friends but some people have no interest in anything out of the norm. I would have asked you a million questions and been so excited to hear your experience, Sorry about them…

~When my kids were little we went to NM on vacation (from East TX). We loved the weather, the hills, mountains, towns, and even a very dramatic thunderstorm/ lightning storm as we were driving back to Texas. NM is diverse and beautiful. I’ve always wanted to go back.

My then husband was very tired on this vacation – his occupation was tiring, and he slept a lot. We pitched a tent in the mountains, and that afternoon I took my kids for a walk, off trail, because I loved the vegetation – pinion pines, plants…

We had been walking a while when a sudden feeling of apprehension struck me dead in my tracks. It ‘felt’ like a wave of something and I looked around and said ‘turn around, we’re going back’. (I’ve had that feeling a few times in my life when in the woods. I grew up in the woods. Whenever me and my little brother or just myself got that feeling we/I paid attention to it). I was not comfortable after that, and would have felt better if my ex could have been more engaged (that’s a whole different subject). Honestly, the feeling made “no sense” because the scenery was short – I could see for a long way ahead. Now I understand a little better how these things can belly crawl, etc. Some other stuff happened that night, but I don’t remember much (it was a long time ago). My husband went outside and fired a shot and things were quite after that. I believed in BF, but thought they lived in California, Oregon and Washington state… (my dad used to ‘joke’about ‘boogers’. I thought he was just trying to control us with fear… duh) I just prayed a little blessing over my kids that night & woke up refreshed, but ready to get out of the boonies with them. 🙂
