Tomorrow night I will be welcoming back to the show Eugene. Eugene is from episode 858 Paralyzed With Fear. He speaks about an incident that happen to him a year ago as he returned to the area of his encounter.
I will also be welcoming Gretchen. Gretchen writes “This happened about 30 years ago in Upstate NY in a small town surrounded on all four side by acres of woods connecting us to the Adirondacks.
I headed to a pine forest one afternoon to pick princess pine for making Christmas wreaths. I took the four wheeler parked it on an old logging road, so I could down the middle of the forest. I was on a mission to get this pine and get home I really wasn’t paying much attention to my surroundings.
As I was walking down a path towards where I knew there was a big patch of princess pine I almost tripped over a huge dead doe. She looked like she was sleeping, no blood or injuries I could see.
People here are hard working, hand to mouth and don’t hunt for trophies so I was shocked to see a deer laying there.
I’d like to mention this part of the forest was posted and I’d never seen any kind of hunting there. I still wore blaze that day.
I found the princess pine patch and got to work. The pine grows on the forest floor so I also had to move a lot of pine straw to get to it and I’m on my hands and knees to forage.
I’d only been picking for a few minutes when for the first time in my life I suddenly got scared I felt watched and all my hair literally stood on end. I tried to ignore it, but I knew something was wrong and stood up. For about 20 seconds after standing up I was lost I turned around in a couple circles and that’s when I saw Bigfoot. Standing about 20 feet from me on the same path. So Bigfoot was in front of me and behind me was the dead doe.
I didn’t hear anything and with pine straw he was able to creep on me.
I have no words for the kind of fear I felt. Sheer terror I was paralyzed, like time stopped, and so confused. We both stood there staring at each other. I had no idea what I was looking at my brain was almost shorting out wondering what this thing was. I called it a monkey beast. Then just called it a monster.
He was the color of black bear, he stood in a stance I would consider threatening. His hands were in fists. His mouth was open and his bottom teeth were pushed in either broken jaw or bad teeth. His eyes were deep set and dark and he looked furious.
He was huge and muscular, I’m 5 3 and felt small and vulnerable. It was a bitter cold day and he also had steam rolling off him which just added to the horror effect
He put his head back and huffed once that’s what broke my inability to move and I took a hard left and started running, I ran right into a tree hard scraping up my face, knocking me down, I got up and kept running uphill FAST, that’s when I heard a very close gunshot which again just doesn’t happen in this forest, so I scramble ran, scared I was going to either be torn apart by this monster or shot. I will never know what the gunshot was about but I don’t believe it was a coincidence.
I went home told my mother I saw a huge monkey in the forest and she laughed. So I’ve told very few people since. I spent that night at my parents with my newborn. I must have looked as shell shocked as I felt because my dad asked me if I was okay. My husband is a logger I was worried for him every day after this experience but I never told him. I did ask him once if they had ever seen a Bigfoot and he replied laughing “why do people ask me that all the time?”
It took me a long long time to stop having nightmares. And get back in the woods again.
I think they’re flesh and blood creatures , with a high level of intelligence, clever and sly. I think they have a language, and they’re capable of problem solving. I also believe they’re dangerous. It’s all theory though isn’t it!”

Yeah, parts of them Adirondacks are extremely thick with small Spruce, and virtually impenetrable….

Gretchen, You almost tripping over that dead doe, seeing the creature, then being so terrified that you almost face-planted into a tree while running away. Could that have been the demise of the doe? Is it possible the deer either had a heart attack from fear or ran fatally into a tree itself trying to get away?
I’d like for us to believe (yourself included) that you are protected by a greater force. Maybe something intervened on your behalf and that by initially becoming startled by the dead deer it better prepared you mentally for what was about to happen next.
You should feel stronger that you looked fear in the face and won by living to tell about it. You are stronger than you know. We appreciate your courage
