The Sly Park Lake Incident

A listener writes “I am e-mailing you from Eldorado County California, the Sierra Nevada area. The same county where my encounters took place. I have recently began listening to your podcasts, and some of the details are earilly similar.

My first encounter took place in 1999 at Slypark Lake. I remember being surprised at seeing this thing, as we were at a county campgrounds. My girlfriend end at the time and I were out camping with a group of her friends, and that night there was a firework display in honor of a kid who had drown in the lake the previous year. Later that night, after the fireworks, my girlfriend and her friends and I were all hanging out on a bench at a spot on the lake we called The point. A small jut of land that cam out onto the lake, with the inlet where we saw this thing about 50 yards away.

It was a clear night, but dark. We all saw what I’m assuming was an adult sasquatch at the same time we felt the dread and fear overcome us. I don’t remember any knocks or whooping. All I remember, is seeing the sudden appearance of a set of glowing red eyes. They didn’t look like eye reflection shine. More like they were self illuminated. I remember thinking they would have looked like Spawns eyes, if they were green instead of red. Myself being into dark magic at the time. Thought it was a demon. You could tell the eyes were wrapped around a giant head. As the inlet was about 50 yards away, we could also tell that they belonged to a very tall creature. Probably about 8 to 9 feet tall.

We could see its silhouette in the darkness and could tell it was huge. We watched it for a while, probably about five minutes, looking around in the the tree line, weaving between the trees looking for something. I wanted to see what it was. Everybody else was terrified. I went to run towards it, but was held back by my concerned girlfriend. We watched it for a big longer before it wandered away into the night. It seed to not know we were there. I remember how it moved. Smooth. Didnt Bob it’s head at all as it wandered between the trees looking for…. something. We waited for a while to make sure it was gone before returning to our campsite. There were no other incidents that night.

The next day we went to the inlet where we saw the thing to look for prints. My girlfriend went to the point to compare my height (6’2) with what we saw. She said it was at least three feet taller than me where I was standing.”

The Lake the listener writes about is also called Jenkinson Lake, or Jenkinson Resevoir. I’m very familiar with the area, and deliberately avoid that area and road (Sly Park Road). It has always had a very creepy vibe and strange feeling despite being not that far off the main interstate highway 50. This lake/reservoir is also pretty close, as the crow flies, to Icehouse Road, where a guest of the show recently recalled his camping close encounter. This entire area of the Sierras, once you get even slightly off main roads, can feel very remote and lonely very quickly. Sounds like an interesting encounter!

Thanks for that info Johanna V. Looks like the point is on Morman Emigrant Trail with Sly Park Creek being the inlet. This has to be a truly beautiful area. This is not the first time I have heard of a Bigfoot(s) being associated with fireworks. I believe the Michigan Recording Project some years ago got some really good vocals during fireworks somewhere along the Manistee River Watershed.

Hi Charles..my pleasure. The Mormon Immigrant trail..yes, I’ve also driven that road, but only once. It’s actually a connector road between Highways 50 and 88, two major Sierra thoroughfares. The Mormon Immigrant road has an extraordinarily remote feeling, with absolutely no infrastructure, yet very well maintained. I only used it as a connector once because it was just too unfriendly and long a road. Strange about the firework connection, too. Thanks for sharing that Michigan experience! I’d love to hear from the witness, because when I did a cursory search, the only recent drowning death seems to be that of a six-year boy in 2013. He was initially reported missing after playing in the water with his sister, and then later found alone in the water. Scant details, but an easy google. So, if there was another incident, around 1999, I couldn’t immediately find it. Yes, it is a very beautiful area, but again, the reservoir itself has always had a weird, unwelcoming feel to it, that is not conveyed in the majestic looking google map photos..????.
