A listener writes “Hey Wes I’ve been following your show for a few years now and after listening to many episodes I’m finally ready to tell my small story…This is the outline
I was about 8 miles into the Susquhanna River Trail, setting up camp around 6:30 PM when I heard this deep, guttural sound echoing through the old growth forest. At first I thought it might be an elk, but it was unlike anything I’d heard in 20 years of hiking these woods. The smell hit me next – this overwhelming musky odor, like wet dog mixed with something wild and pungent. My dog Arya started whimpering and pressed against my legs, which was completely out of character for her. That’s when I saw it through the massive Douglas firs, maybe 80 yards away.
This enormous, dark figure moving between the trees with a strange, fluid gait. It had to be at least 8 feet tall, covered in dark brown hair, with incredibly broad shoulders. The way it moved wasn’t quite human – too smooth, too purposeful. It paused and seemed to look directly at me for what felt like forever but was probably only 10-15 seconds. I fumbled for my phone camera, but my hands were shaking so badly I couldn’t get it focused. By the time I looked up again, it had vanished into the thick underbrush without making a sound.
I found some disturbed vegetation the next morning and what looked like a partial footprint in the soft earth near the creek, but the rain overnight had washed away most details. I’ve been hiking these mountains my whole life, and I know every animal that lives here. This was something else entirely.”
