That Was My Last Day In The Woods

A listener writes “My sighting happened in 2014. I’ve only told 3 or 4 people and not to any organizations. My family has hunted one area in Idaho for 30+ years. Mainly in 2 specific valleys and 2 ridgelines.

Oct 15th or so, elk season, 2 of us drove quads up a trail to a ridgeline that connects to Grandmother mountain. The walk started at early twilight, We went west down the drainage and jumped a Bull. After an hour or 2 of playing the silent game we found out we flushed a small herd and they scattered.
We went back up to the ridge and split. The other guy went to the east drainage and I walked silently down the quad trail and where we came from.

Probably went 1/4 mile back to a intersection where I can see the clear cut to the north, surrounding the old skid road up the mountain. I’m standing there listening and looking for anything…….5-10 foot saplings next to the trail. Old growth right behind it, no wind, misty air with clouds just above the tree tops. 35-40 degrees.

Then, I hear people talking from 150+ yds away. And I think, “Asian Brush Pickers” shouldn’t up here picking Christmas material during hunting season. So I’m about to go through the small trees and warn the people that hunters are around.

They’re walking towards me just inside the tree line. Then I hear a deep woman’s voice and a young teenager voice. Female voice is talking casually like she’s explaining what they’re doing while they’re walking.

I freeze on the trail with a small window across from me and get a “DON’T MOVE” feeling.
They’re about 40-50 yards away still coming and I think “that’s not Chinese or Korean”. 20-30 away coming towards me I hear a language I’ve never heard, female is consistently talking and you can hear an extremely wide mouth in the voice. Like a deep voiced Carol Channing using every part of their mouth to talk.

What got me was the younger one was talking at the same time occasionally. Basically, interjecting and they’d both be speaking at the same time, not back and forth.

They walked right past me on the other side of the small trees. I’d say 20-25 feet when I saw what looked like a dark bark hair colored “Patty” from about the elbow up walking fairly fast just inside the big trees.

It was looking away from me when I had my look. Estimated 6-7 feet. The first clear words I heard were “Jaba deba dib jap”, letters I heard the most. j,b,d,a,e,i

They walked on by and I didn’t move. Didn’t want to. Plus, I’m not sure there wasn’t another behind me telling me to freeze.

I’m sure they knew we went up the hill earlier but, didn’t expect someone to backtrack. I walked back to the quads waited for the other guy, and had to drive back right past the entire clear cut they skirted.
Never said a word to the other guy and shelved the memory until I heard of someone else seeing something in the area.

These are at least partially human. This was not a monkey conversation.
I think they act a certain way around us to get a desired result. Sometimes it’s because you are in the way, sometimes it’s just for entertainment. Never even thought about Sasquatch in Idaho. I was too worried about wolves, cougars and moose.

That day in 2014 was my last day in the woods of Idaho.”

I look forward to the rest of the story. I like the analogy of Carol Channing and know exactly what you are talking about. Also the fact that they were so close and did not pick up on you may be a sign that their sense of smell is not all the great.
