Strange Sounds From The Allegheny National Forest

The Allegheny National Forest is a National Forest in Northwestern Pennsylvania, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The forest covers 513,175 acres of land. Within the forest is Kinzua Dam, which impounds the Allegheny River to form Allegheny Reservoir.

A listener writes “I was camping and I kept hearing this scream coming from the woods. It was off in the distance but it was alarming. I picked up my phone and tried to capture it.”

Definitely something there, reminds me of something I heard many many years ago in northeastern Pennsylvania while fishing in a gorge. Very Similar to what’s on this tape and makes me wonder if what I thought was a bear might have been something else entirely.

I hear a two tone soft howl or moan (high tone followed by a low tone). I have heard this *exact* sound multiple times. It is very loud in person and always comes across the top of a small valley when I’m at one of the ridge tops very late in the evening up to around midnight. Sometimes it sounds like singing because it repeats itself without pause for a minute or two. Very eerie yet beautiful at the same time. My gut says it’s a female.
