A listener writes “My husband and I are on holiday in the US from Australia. We have been mostly visiting small towns and trying to experience nature here.
We spent 3 nights in Ashford in an Airbnb as base to visit Mt Rainier National Park.
The cabin has a hot tub outside under a shelter, but it is not enclosed. After our long day of travelling we wanted to relax in the tub. It was about 7.30pm, I was at one end of the tub and he was at the other facing me.
We had been in the tub for about 5 minutes chatting when we both went silent because we heard a roar/scream sound coming from a distance to my right/his left.
The sound was incredibly loud and it was a low guttural roar mixed with a scream. I used to be in a heavy metal band and this sound was like something from a death metal singer, but louder, deeper and longer than I think any person could make.
This sound continued over and over again with a gap of a few seconds each time. We estimate each roar was about 8-10 seconds long. We both froze and were wondering what it was. We stayed in the tub, we were near a national park after all and thought it is probably normal here. The sound continued and for me it sounded like it moved from my right to directly behind me, and got louder and closer. It moved faster than I expected something could move in a thick forest, continuing the roars as it moved.
For my husband who was facing the direction of the sound, he says it was coming from more behind my right shoulder and moved closer at a diagonal. As the sound got much louder when it reached the point of being behind me, I heard a second ‘voice’ make a grunting noise and then the same roar/scream.
My husband also heard the second one.
At this point my hackles were up. Hearing the second voice and hearing them move closer, I said I am going inside, let’s get back in the house. I don’t want to know what is making that noise, let’s go. I felt very vulnerable being out in the dark, without many clothes, in the cold. I got out of the tub fast and ran inside.
My husband was still in the tub and says that he heard the same long roar/screams continuing. One moved to his right, and the other moved to his left. This is when he also got out of the tub and came inside. We could not hear them from inside.
There are houses between where we were, and the forest. Many appeared to be empty holiday homes.
We have listened to many recordings of animals and nothing is similar. My husband is a fanatical fisherman and did a year of research about wildlife for safety purposes before we came to the US.
We spoke to the people at the North American Bigfoot Centre in Boring as we were passing through and they played us some sounds of animals but nothing was like it.
Do you have any suggestions for other recordings that might be similar? Have you heard any similar accounts in that area? It is really bothering us.”

Welcome to the PNW, huh? I hope y’all enjoyed your trip besides being scared that way. Thanks for sharing!

I live in PNW, but surprisingly the only place I’ve heard roars like this was in upstate NY. Very close by but no visuals of anything producing the sound.

Pretty sure you heard a couple of sasquatches communicating with each other as they moved through the forest.
