Strange Sound Heard

A listener writes “I had an experience that I want to share with you simply because there isn’t anyone else I can tell. I guess it’s not as exciting as many other encounters I’ve heard on your show but still, it was strange.

Back in 2019 I was camping with my wife in Plumas County in northern CA, Lakes Basin area specifically. It was early November after the camping/outdoor season and we were alone. We set up camp near a small lake / large pond. During the day I thought I would explore the area so I decided to walk around the shoreline of this pond. As I made my way around I discovered that it was extremely tough hiking ( no trail, dense forest, marshy in some areas) it was nothing but national forest on the opposite side of the water. It took me about 45 minutes to walk around the pond.

Later that evening we had some food, started a campfire and just relaxed and enjoyed the quiet. My wife decided to turn in but I stayed up. At about 11:30 pm I noticed a foul smell. I’ve heard many different descriptions of sasquatch odors but I identified this smell as the very strong smell of a homeless person. I don’t know if you’ve ever had a close up encounter with a long time homeless person but it is foul. Anyway, it was very quiet and I was listening carefully for the sound of someone nearby. I was puzzled because this is a remote area. All of a sudden the loudest roar I have ever heard rang out from across the pond. I could feel sound waves on my body. I have experienced African Lion roars when I observed a feeding once at a wildlife preserve, this was louder, and deeper. I immediately thought that only something large could make a sound like that.

We only heard the single roar, there was no other sound. There are black bear and cats in the area so when I got home I started doing some investigating on what could have made that roar. Nothing seemed to be close? Do you know what it could have been?”
