Strange noise scares off Grizzly bear

A listener writes “I believe it was 2018 in the spring time when my friend/ coworker and I were surveying in the Canadian rockies in BC up the Kootenay River valley.

We survey newly planned forestry roads. I believe it was our second or third day on the job working our way deeper into the forest.

We parked our truck at the end of the existing road and headed in. The hike in seemed normal like any other day, giving the odd callout to alert wildlife we’re coming through.

We caught up to our work from the day before and began setting control hubs for cross sectioning. Setting hubs involves finding sticks about an 1 1/2” in diameter to pound into the ground with a hatchet to act as a center point.

We worked our way up and caught patches of snow when I noticed grizzly tracks about 5 1/2” wide meaning it was a least a 6’ bear. We kept working keeping our eyes open talking away hoping to be heard, that’s when we heard the first vocalization ( hoo) coming up our path behind us. We looked at each other and pondered what made that sound.

We joked about looking at trees to climb and kept working noticing more evidence that the grizzly was in there with us. A little while later another “hoo” comes from behind us and all of a sudden about 20-30 yards ahead of us the grizzly tears off through a patch of alder away from the sound.

We were pretty baffled as to what was making that sound and why it would scare off a decent size grizzly.

So we kept working wrapping up a switchback until we hit an opening in the forest canopy and then the final “hoo” came from in front of us. This hoo made us stop in our tracks, you could feel it hit your chest and smack your spine.

We couldn’t see anything and decided to pull out our machetes, hatchets and bear spray while we ate some food giving the situation time to play out. Nothing else happened but we call it a day not knowing what that was.

We hiked back in the next day and nothing else happened.

Definitely not exciting like lots of people’s accounts but it was the oddest thing I’ve ever experienced in the bush.”
